Title: Antique Monterey Ornate Desk???
Post by: jagged on February 24, 2015, 09:20:50 PM
Here are a few pictures of what I thought to be a monterey desk, when you open it up, the bottom tray slides out to form a sort of desk.

Any ideas would be great.

California Mission style,, or you can call it Monterrey style !!  Either is OK !! Who antiqued it ??

Not sure who antiqued it, but we weren't dure to have it striped or not, what year do you think it's from? And would it be of value by chance?

Can you take a pic of the underside of the desk and a close up of the strap hinges on the front !! This could also be Spanish Revival depending on who you ask !!  As well as I remember those strap hinges were never used on the older Spanish/Monterey style desks and not on the California Mission style !!  But the interior shows more age than what I would expect from the 60`s produced furniture !!  Can tell more with other pics!!

The inside reminds me of the old Spanish Vargueno Desk...which these were styled after.  But this doesn't appear to be that old AND it doesn't have the detail that an truly antique/old one would have.  (I have seen old phone cabinets made in this style.)

Agree, need more pics.  Also, please stand back and take a pic of the interior with the doors open.
(The fourth pic posted confuses me with the "rounded" open area.)

Ha !!  We think alike KC !!  It confused me too till I looked at the full side view and saw the rounded area at top of the legs,,finally figured out that it was a side view too !! Just closer !!

If you notice on the first couple of pics that I last posted, when the doors shut, there is a quick release button latch that presses in to lock the door in place.

So I just found it here... But someone had done a stress paint type of method that took away from the original it seems :\, I'm not sure the worth but this auction has a range... Not sure if that's accurate.

I think Rauville may be a member there !!  Maybe he will tell us what the selling price was !!  I do not think it would go anywhere close to the estimate !!  $400. would be a big price for it !!  These are not the old originals !! These were made 1940`s through 60`s and are made along the same lines but not accurate to the original vargueno desks !!
