Title: Should one restore the metal on a ship's wheel?
Post by: acqua on April 10, 2015, 04:30:37 AM
I have just bought a genuine old ship's wheel in its original condition. The metal parts have corrosion on them. Do you think I should clean it to make it look shinier? Some family members are of the opinion I should leave it as is, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

Totally up to you...but I would keep it as is!  That is part of it's story/history!

If you clean off the metal,,you also clean off the value !!  Do no more than dust with a soft cloth !!

Agree Mart - not only monetary value but more importantly sentimental value! :)

It would look beautiful hanging anywhere as-is !!

But would you hang it in a room which has no nautical feel - say a formal sitting room? My husband is sceptic about it, though I love boats and ships.

What better place for a "conversation" piece hanging on the wall of ... a formal sitting room? ;D ;D

Better than just a "picture" ..... or even a "signed" oil painting.  IMO  ;)

You're right mart. In fact we never use it ourselves, even though it's on our way in! Instead we use the kitchen/living and the casual living room at the back of the house. More practical :) But it's so nice to have a more formal room where unexpected or certain guests are greeted :)

I agree. If you want to remain the value of this stuff, better to leave the dust that covers in every part of it.
