I picked this up at a thrift store the other day for $3.00. I for the love of God cannot find anything about this piece. In the top corner it says "August" then the bottom left it says "Homestead built by John Eldert in 1772 Belmont Avenue and Mill Road East New York". It looks like there might be a copyright date above the word "Road", but I cannot make it out. The case is 11"x10"x4". Any info would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to know if this is worth the $3.00 I spent on it. Thanks in advance!!

I can find nothing to match that inscription.... judging by the size, is it a hat box?

Yes,, need to know the size !! Looks more like an equipment box of some sort !! And with that early pic of a NY homestead I am guessing a vintage surveyers transit case !!
What is in that box lower rt front ??

I put the dimensions, would you like me put something next to it?

Missed the size !! Sorry !! That small, I still say vintage transit case or something similar !! Even into the 60`s they were carried in a case of some sort and were considered delicate equipment !!
