hello-this is so delicate - I have no idea if the container is as old as the spoon or if it always all went together but I love it.
Do you agree the initials seem to both be W? Do you think this was always together?

What a pretty little jam jar !! Could well have always been together !! Used for most anything but jam or jelly was the usual !!
-
hi mart-isn't it pretty? Can I think it's from about the date on the spoon? Do you think it was part of their service set? Just wondered how often one engraved their initials?
-
Well, That's the patent date so had to be made after that date !! My guess would be the 20`s or thereabout !! Nice find !!
-
Love your beautiful condiment/jam/jelly jar. These were also used for honey! 🐝
Sure looks like two initials to me. Try a rubbing and see if it shows up better. The second initial looks like a W to me as well.
-
thanks KC-I always think sugar I guess--
I think both initials are W--not a common initial for sure. Do you have any idea KC how often people monogramed all service sets? Do you think just the initial went on the spoon? Or would you think a whole set is out there with this monogram?
-
So often it was such a nice, heartfelt gift to give a single spoon or a set of spoons that were monogrammed. Made the receiver feel extra, extra special! Either way (single or set) was very common. :)
Interesting that both initials were WW. Could see that though. Know plenty of people with first last initials the same.

Could have been a wedding gift ect !!
-
thanks KC-you too Mart
Seems people were a lot more considerate back then doesn't it? The time it took to pick out, get engraved, and give the gift sure took a lot more thought than Amazon.
yes, initials matching are not uncommon, but it's the W-my name starts with one and I know how common that is. One more question-if this were a wedding gift-would the initials be of the husband;s first name or the womans'/
-
For a kitchen item I would thnk the womans married name !! Could have even been the first letter of each given name !! Wanda and Wesley or Winnie and William !!
-
thanks mart-just think of how it seemed to be the "man of the house" in the day--nice to think the "lady of the house" had her own things too

Yepper.
Like the finer vanity sets, compacts, chatelaine items, etc..typically the spoons, and often tea sets/tea items, would have the woman's initials on them.
If it was a full silverware setting (such as for 8 or 12 as was proper) or large silver pieces, they would normally have just the Family Name initial.
At least in this country it is easy to locate a woman who is married because she most likely has the same last name as her husband (or is a hypen with her married name). In other countries, the woman retains her maiden name but her children have the husbands last name. I have found that very difficult when trying to locate someone and not knowing her husband name. Hard to find that she has an identity.
