I am posting this for my sister. She has 2 small vintage shops on Etsy and bought this a few weeks ago at a garage sale. She and I have been searching to find an approximate age and value. It is a brass vessel with lid and a spout. I have seen copper water dispensers and many Samovars, which this is not, but none look like this. In fact its kind of plain. It's dimensions are 12 1/2" with lid x 8 1/2" at the widest point. It sits on a wrought iron base which then makes it 15" high. We can not find any markings that show up on the bottom but the spout is marked with "este 300 lb" and what looks like a cursive D and no. 1. The inside appears to be galvanized metal. I will post all the pics and it will take a couple of postings. Would love your insights!

That would be tinned copper and probably French made !!
-
So it just has a brass coating? I thought it appeared to have copper showing through the brass in places. Any suggestions of age or value Mart?

Here is a similar dispenser for coffee it says but the French may have used similar designs for other liquids !! How big is this one and is the spigot tall enough for a teacup or coffee ?? These would possibly be used with a candle below like a tea light !!
-
Brass has copper in it so depends on how much as to what it looks like !! Items used for food or beverage are mostly tin lined for safety !! Copper/brass is excellent for even heat distribution but there has been some speculation over the saftety factor of its directly touching the food or beverage !!
-
It is tall enough to place a cup under it. My thoughts too were that there was a candle or sterno set under it. The stand does not hold one though. It is 15" tall when on the stand. So copper and brass mixed huh? Cool!
-
Brass is a mixture of copper and zinc in varying amounts !! But most all of them are referred to as copper on most sites !!
-
Oh! I learn something new everyday! Thanks Mart, I will try that in my searches. You guys are the best! Thanks!
-
I was looking at the picture of he spout again. Dies it appear to be monogrammed to y'all? I didn't see this looking at the item itself.
-
Thanks Mart for all the tips. My search with them brought several others. Still none look like this one but it seems no two are the same anyway. They range from very rustic to ornate like the one you linked. This one falls kind of in between. This will help her in her title, tags and price. I read this forum every day so as to gain knowledge from y'all! It just bothers me when I see questions that y'all answer or need more info on a d the poster doesn't get back to you. A simple thank you doesn't take much effort. Have a wonderful day and ill be back soon!😀
-
The handle does appear to have a monogram. To me it seems to be DN?
I was thinking coffee or hot water dispenser. It does appear to be tall enough to have a burner underneath. However, does it appear to have any heat/wear on the bottom?

Thank you so much for the nice words !! Glad to know that you are reading and expanding your knowledge !! That is what this forum is for,,learning !! And I mean all of us !! Even us oldies learn something new almost on a daily basis !!

Thanks Jisherf! It's always good to help come up with information for someone who's actually grateful! Come back any time.

KC unless someone cleaned it recently it does not appear to have had fire to the bottom now that I look at it. Here are two pics of the bottom.
-
Thanks ghopper, I do have questions regarding a Morris style chair I will be posting pics of soon. Still haven't found one that looks exactly like my aunt's. Have read a lot of info and all my aunt knows about this one is her mother in law told her it was 200 yrs old. I questioned her on that just today because I thought she told me 100 yrs. Her mother in law is no longer with us to ask for sure. My aunt could have it confused with her dining table she also inherited from her in laws. Anyway thanks for the invite back.
Mart I really really do appreciate y'all bunches!
-
I have used tea lights with some of my 50`s coffee warmers with nothing but a small amount of soot which is easily cleaned with soap and water !!
-
That would make perfect sense! Smaller flame no burns! Was just reading y'alls post on that gorgeous apothecary cabinet! I love your comradery! Thanks again!
-
Like one big happy family around here !! ;D
-
Sure feels that way to me!
-
My persnickety ;D opinion is, .... your item is made of brass with a “tinned” interior and a “cast” brass spigot that is soldered (lead/tin) to it.
-
Cogar, "persnickety"!!??!! Lol! Thank you for your response! Any idea of age by chance?
-
I'm thinking it could have been for just water or a drink unheated.
It was obviously raised on legs for the purpose of making it easier to dispense to an average size cup.
-
That sounds right. It does have enough room under it for a short candle but the bottom does not appear to have had any high/hot heat to it. We have seen other water dispensers that were a more rustic design. It isn't fancy but also not like one you would use while working outdoors if you know what I mean. My sister didn't have aa chance to talk to the seller as she was really busy and my sister was "on the hunt" for Ber next treasure! Lol! Thank you for your response. Sure do wish I had more info. I am thinking about finding out where the garage sale was and going to ask questions. I may do that Saturday. Lol! She would never do it as she is a little shy about some things. I would love to have the provenance or at least a date it was acquired by the seller! Thanks again!
-
Sad to say I believe my sister is missing part of this dispenser! I found this one and it clearly shows a small tray and warmer that the vessel sits on. https://www.ebth.com/items/2327470-antique-copper-beverage-dispenser
Does anyone know how much this takes from the value? I have read many articles and one on samovars stated that collectors also look for the accessories to go with their samovars as trays and such. This not being a samovar I'm not sure if it applies. Also the one I linked to only sold for $22. It was probably an eBay auction and my sister sells on Etsy where she sets her price and then waits. As I'm sure most sellers do. Lol! Any suggestions on my new dilemma?
-
I have several samovars and they are valuable - sentimentally only!
Unless they are truly original antiques and/or have all the strikes of foundries and medals awarded for design (which were struck on the pieces as well), are unique in artistry - they don't bear much monetary value. However, I can testify that they are priceless when you are in Siberia during the winter!!!!!
Yours I would not call a samovar! I would call it a water urn. It could have had a heating unit....but many urns merely had hot water put in them! The other indicator to me that it may not have been for hot water is that there aren't any handles on it. If you look at hot water urns/samovars, they have handles so that you don't burn your hands. (Just my observations.)
Examples of different kinds.

Yeah, the problem with all this is, you should not use this to hold any liquids that humans will drink, in addition to the lead based solder that attaches spout, brass contains lead as well unless manufactured after 2014 (federal mandate for lead free brass). As a decorative item though, it's fine.
-
Thank you KC! I knew it was not a samovar for sure after reading and looking at others. Would love to see your collection! Siberia!!??? Brrrrr!! I really appreciate the observation of no handles. You would have thought I was smart enough to realize this just by looking! Lol! This sums it up for me! Thanks! Jacon4 you are so right about not using it for anything but decorative reasons. I just love the look and could picture it in someone's collection of cool kitchen decor. Thank you all and I believe we can close this one. Lol! I again want to express my sincere thanks for all who gave me advice on this piece. Until the next one.....Jeri
-
Jisherf I would love to post pics of my samovars but they are boxed up and I don't have pics of them already. No telling when I will get around to opening them again. We are reflooring the house and it isn't being done overnight! So, the home is in uproar (as usual).
The two that I do have out are modern (in Russian terms) from the mid 1900's and are electric. I bought/used them during my travels in Siberia/Russia in the 90's. They are a reminder of how spoiled we are here...and how much clean water/hot water was a precious commodity and we take for granted here.
Couldn't get out the ladder...so a "from below" shot of one of them on the top of the kitchen cabinets. Makes nice decor and we pull it out when we have groups over for hot water for tea, etc.
-
That is gorgeous KC! Like I said about my sister's water dispenser, awesome decorator piece. Yours however sure beats a Keurig at a "get together"!!! Do you happen to have a blog on your Siberian experience? Very intriguing! Good luck with your remodel. I've been through many and know how trying they can be.
-
Nope don't have a blog.
But a friend has a chapter about our family in his book "Favorite Tales From Siberia" Randy Black, Author. It took us just under 6 years and 3 trips to Siberia to get our 2 adopted children from Russia. He was a big help to us.
-
How wonderful! I will have to look for the book. What a journey that must have been. And I don't just mean the travel! I love stories of love such as this! Good for you!
-
Check at thrift stores for a go-with to replace the little tray !! Shouldn`t be too hard to find something that would work !! If you can`t find a brass tray look for a small piece of Limoges and add that for the country French look !! Selling is all in the story and the presentation !! Take your pics with it sitting on a nice lacy background and throw in a flower or two !! I would even add a small cup and saucer in a country French pattern and a small silver plated spoon !!Just figure your selling price accordingly !! Packages seem to sell well around the Christmas holiday !! I always pick up "go-withs" at garage sales, thrift stores ect !! You know,,a pretty little cup and saucer for a dollar and cute silver spoon for $.25 !! These are used to spruce up a plain item or as a go-with for an item with a part missing !!
-
Great idea Mart. She usually does have a vignette in her pics! Since this is her decor style she should have no problem coming up with a beauty! I do like the idea of a grouping sale! With a white cup and saucer and spoon maybe a toile napkin in a neutral color. And of course a small vase with flower. I can picture it too!
-
Would also blend quite well with the Shabby Chic décor !! The wider the target audience,, the better !!
-
Yes it would! At this time hubby and I are living with my aunt to take care of her and her rental properties. All I have to decorate is my bedroom as her house is decorated to her taste. Oh to have a house again that I could decorate as I want! But for now God has another plan. Until then I dream!
-
I'm pretty sure this is for water....HOWEVER, they did use dispensers in the middle east for olive oil!
-
Olive oil huh? And it just keeps getting more intriguing! Lol! Thanks! 😁

But you are doing a good thing !! Family is important,, you only have one !!
-
You are right Mart! Other than a few cousins she is all we have left of Daddy's family. We do what we must and we happened to be the only ones in the position to be able to do it. So it must have been all in God's initial plan. So I keep reminding myself.....
-
Totally agree! Share as much time with family as you can. They can't be replaced...but your antiques (at least most of them) can! :)
-
You're right KC! We have all lost family. Would love to have them all back too! I have had to down size so many times that my collection now sits in one Rubbermaid container. They aren't even valuable just to me! Lol! Until I get my shelving that's where they will stay.
Guess what! My sister just told me that the dispenser was sitting on a brass tray but she didn't think anything about it and the seller didn't say anything. She is going to go back tomorrow and see if she still has it! She said she almost didn't buy it but my other sister talked her into it. So she was a little "rattled" at the time. She is just sick over it! Cross fingers y'all!
-
Crossing my fingers and toes !! ;D
-
Thanks Mart! Me too!!!!! I told her even if she doesn't have it to please ask her about the dispenser. So maybe we will find out some history of it which to me is the best part!
-
That would make perfect sense!

I always encourage people to get any history of pieces that are available! :) Best of luck!
-
It does make sense Adair1205! Thanks!
KC, if I had been with her they would have been mad at me! I would have waited to talk to the seller! She gets in a hurry to get to the next treasure! Lol! Mama just told me she thought she picked up the tray but obviously she was wrong. Sad to say she did t get to go "hunting" yesterday as she had one if her rentals she had to get ready to rent. Priorities are the pits sometimes! Lol! Maybe next week!
