Title: antique oriental lidded jar

i know nothing about this one, it stands 20 cm high, has a cork stopper and an impressed mark to the base. any info greatly appreciated.

There are earlier vases with these etched marks but looking at the shade of red used, the horse's head and the base, I'd say this was more recent. Might be 1970s or later.

hi, thanks for the quick reply, i've just taken another pic on a different camera as the red isn't very accurate on the other, does this look any better, its a brown sort of tone if that makes sense lol!

They had corks as well as lids.  Seems yours is missing the lid. 

Originally these were for spices - thus typically called a ginger jar.  Through the years have been reproduced over and over because of the shape, size (easy to reproduce and affordable for most to buy).

That one on EBay claiming to be 19th century is also 20th century, just made better.

thanks ipcress & kc, i'll pass the info onto my friend, he bought it recently in a charity shop for a fiver, not a terrible loss then! lol!
