Title: A "New" Hadley Chest is Discovered
Post by: jacon4 on January 19, 2016, 07:40:57 AM
OK, this chest has created quite a BUZZ in the Americana world this year. It's being sold by Christies in a few days, i have no clue what it's value is but, it would not surprise me if this chest sells in the million dollar range.

I was looking at the Memorial Hall Museum page on Facebook the other day and admiring the Sarah Hawks Hadley Chest they showed there. What fantastic work went into those pieces.

This chest was previously unknown which is why it has created a lot of interest. It was a unique time in American furniture when paint started a new decorating style, rather than carving which was, up until then the way these chests were decorated for centuries.

Alrighty then, VALUE! just got a call from someone interested in the above chest, knowed it was comin! Wants me to call Christies and get their estimate because it's not published and "James, you are brazen that way". While i wait on Christies, lets look at the record holder for a single piece of paint decorated american furniture. This chest sold for 3 million (2,928,000) in 2006, it was in Mrs Insley Blair's furniture collection. It was in her bathroom used as a shelf holding toothbrushes & stuff! Check out the video below

Wow!!!  These are both awesome pieces but my preference, if I had a choice, lol, would be the newly discovered one.  I love it.  It amazes me that pieces made so long ago still exist.

Yeah, well, if I had a choice, I'd go with Mrs Blair's toothbrush holder, the Robert Crosman chest because, it really was/is the rosetta stone for all the Crosman pieces, it is the ONLY piece that Crosman signed and dated on the back. It tied together all the other 20 something Crosman chests that exist today. Crosman was a drum maker who lived in Taunton Mass who built and painted these chests in his spare time i guess to make some extra money. The fact that Mrs Blair used it in her bathroom is neat, it tells me she had no idea what it really was and could care less most likely, she liked it, she bought it, she saw it in her bath everyday and, that's THAT! Pic below is the back of the Crosman chest

Oh I see!!!  I get it from a collectors stand point but from a decorative stand point, the new found one is more my taste.  I too found the use of this in her bathroom interesting.  Was she a wealthy woman with more items of value?

OKEY DOKEY, Christies is still thinking about the auction estimate, as of now "it will likely be set in the range of $300,000-$600,000. " That sounds about right to me too, i really doubt it will approach the Crosman chest record though for a couple reasons. First off it's signed and dated and two, the Crosman chest sold in 2006, before the housing crash in 2008 that really put a dent in antique furniture prices. Naturally, you never know, i can see where every museum in the nation that has an early furniture collection would be calling their donors/patrons to beg them to PLEASE! underwrite this Hadley chest acquisition, it's not like they will get another shot at one any time soon.

Yes, very wealthy and she donated many objects as well. Here is a piece about her in 2006 in the NYT, Mrs Blair played with the BIG BOYS when it came to acquiring early americana in the first half 20th century
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/06/arts/design/06anti.html?ref=furniture

Oh Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd gladly take the Hadley chest, it's a gem no doubt but, if i had a choice........

Loved the article!  It sounds like she was a very interesting woman!  This is where I have to watch my envy.  Lol! Wish I had a rich relative leaving me a treasure trove!  Just one piece of that furniture would be more than enough!  Lol!  I live simply so it wouldn't take much!  Shoot...I got excited yesterday over my $1.99 authentic Dooney & Bourke vintage wallet from the Goodwill!  Like I said, it would take just a little to make me happy!  😁

Here's a short history on the origin of the name: http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1993-02-28/features/1993059231_1_hadley-chests-american-art (http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1993-02-28/features/1993059231_1_hadley-chests-american-art)

Why are they called Hadley chests when they were made by a guy named Crosman in Taunton MA?

They are 2 different chests and 2 different styles, sorry for the confusion. Hadley chests, like the one up for sale were built in Hadley area of Mass. are pilgrim. The W&M Crosman chest that holds the record for a paint decorated piece is one of a group of 22 chests built by a guy named Robert Crosman who lived and worked in Taunton Mass.
The Hadley chests are built in the pilgrim style, that is, joined oak that was riven (split), what makes this particular Hadley chest different is, instead of shallow relief carving to decorate, as was the custom for hundreds of years prior, this chest is painted with no carving. There is a small group of Hadley chests that were built with paint only decoration, this chest up for sale is among that small group which was previously unknown.

The reason i posted the Crosman chest of drawers which is a boarded, not riven and not pilgrim is, it holds the record for a painted piece of american furniture. It really has no relation to the earlier pilgrim style chests except that it is painted.

Mart, were you able to watch the video on the chests?

Geez, that's to bad, is anyone else having trouble with the videos? The reason i ask is they are very well done and offer much better quality images of the chests. My buddy, who is in Florence Italy now, is going for this chest, i figure this chest to be at least 500k but, it could well go higher, much higher. I still don't think it will set a new record though, course, i could be wrong.

This thread on Early American Furniture triggered my old memories of one of the greatest experiences I ever had.

T’was in the mid-1970’s that myself, my wife, my older brother and his wife were given a private, day-long tour of Kamp Kill Kare in all of its untouched glory and contents. This tour was offered to us by the Caretaker whose son was married to my niece.

And talk about contents, there were 21 buildings @ KKK, one of them being a small stone Catholic Church that was imported from Ireland and one other was a small Pub imported from England ….. and most every building was “chock full” of antiques of all descriptions (furniture, glassware, pottery, guns, etc., etc.) and most items had an inventory “tag” attached because the property and contents belonged to the heirs of the Mabel Brady Garvan Estate, …… a name that I am sure that Jacon4 is familiar with.

My wife, who thought herself to be quite knowledgeable about antiques, spent most of that day saying to herself, ….. “Oh my gawd, .... Oh my gawd”, …. every time she viewed something different.

Cheers

ps: I heard later on that when the heirs removed the contents of KKK it took  20 tractor-trailer loads to do so.

Oh yeah, the Garvan collection i think was donated to Yale univ. sometime in the 1930s, it's probably most famous for it's early american silver.

Well, tomorrow is the big day, it's the first lot up at 10.30 a.m.. Hard to say what this chest will go for but, i still say it will not threaten the record set by the Crosman chest in 2006. It's a totally different world from that time these days in old furniture.

Not sure about this but I think the 300+ point drop in the stock market may have an effect on selling price !! Some people are watching their money right now !!  Of course that may be a drop in the bucket for some !!  Just wondering !!

Kevin WINS!!!! hammer price was 850k and after buyer premium, chest was over 1 million. Still, a long way from the record but it sold high considering today's world in old furniture prices.

THE PRIZE: Kevin wins a Karma! from everyone that lost!

Title: Re: A "New" Hadley Chest is Discovered
Post by: jacon4 on January 22, 2016, 10:45:37 AM
Bidding stalled at 480k and i thought maybe i was a winner but alas, not to be, what was REALLY happening is, the 2 or 3 real players were deciding if they were going to blow through their self imposed limits, which they did.

BTW, the Crosman chest earlier in this thread, the record holder? It has the EXACT SAME brass pulls that my painted chest has, cool. I didn't realise it until i saw the video on that chest and yep, same brass pulls as on my W&M chest.

So, it has the same brass as Taunton Mass Crosman chest which is on the eastern/coastal side of Mass but it has the paint decoration of Hadley Mass which is up the Conn river valley in the middle of the state, add in it is built out of poplar, not pine. So, where does that leave me? I kinda wish i had not seen that crosman video, it presents more questions than it answers!

I gave Kevin a karma point!  Jacon4, I am sure you have lots of questions now!  That is so cool that you have these on one chest.  I bet its beautiful!
Title: Re: A "New" Hadley Chest is Discovered
Post by: jacon4 on January 23, 2016, 04:13:44 AM
That is so cool that you have these on one chest.

Yeah, knew mine had original pulls and knew the paint decorations were compass inspired like the Hadley area but, the thing is, in 1700 america travel in anything other than a single rider on a horse was very brutal. No roads to speak of so transporting goods by wagon was a MAJOR pain/expedition, its over a hundred miles from Taunton to Hadley which in that time may as well have been like going to moon for most people. That's the trouble with old furniture, there are ALWAYS more questions than answers.

BTW, to give this painted Hadley chest some perspective price wise, there was another Hadley chest for sale at Sotheby's 2 days before this painted one. It's carved in the traditional manner of pilgrim furniture, so, exactly the same form, built in the same area and for all we know, could have been from the same shop as the painted one, it sold for......37k BP included

Jacon4, that's a beauty too!  Still like the one that just sold the best.  Did this one you just linked get repainted or is that original?  I guess that's why my fav is the newer one because I love the age it shows.  The video stated that it probably had a clear coat put on it at one time.  ( if my memory serves me right). That helped it to keep its originality in the paint. I've been reading old post.  Did you post your chest on here at one time?  So many of the pics have been lost, I would love to see a pic of yours.  I love the design, they look to be able to serve so many uses.
Title: Re: A "New" Hadley Chest is Discovered
Post by: jacon4 on January 23, 2016, 06:58:19 AM
paint was not original and feet were replaced on Sotheby chest which is why it sold for 37k. My chest is on here somewhere, its not pilgrim, its william & mary like the crosman chest but it has that compass paint decorated element, i'll try and find pic.

The paint decorated chest that just sold yesterday still has discolored/dirty varnish on it which will likely be removed and look like this chest which was probably made in same shop. This chest is in the Chipstone foundation and likely what chest that sold yesterday will look like once paint restorers finish work on it.

my W&M chest, not a very good pic but all i have at the moment, it's not nearly as important as the crosman or painted pilgrim that sold yesterday but considering it was a gift, i am happy to have it.

I hope I see the next one!

Sorry Hubby is a bit of a handful on pain medications after surgery - he is a go-getter and doesn't like to sit around doing nothing and is as active a 2 year old.  The next surgery in 2 weeks (hernia) will be a real challenge to keep him in line for 8 weeks!  All prayers appreciated!  :)

Yep KC, you missed it all!!! It's Americana month in NYC every Jan. and the Christie & Sotheby sale starts it off, followed by the shows in NYC. Everybody who is anybody in the americana world does these shows, either attending or showing their latest and best stuff. That painted pilgrim chest this year created quite a buzz no doubt which was just what the americana shows needed as it has been a bit down last couple years in terms of product. Hopefully the snow storms don't put a crimp in the shows.
Can't handle hubby huh, maybe you didn't train him right! BAM! Hopes he recovers from his issues soon!
