Title: It's Auction Day!
Post by: jacon4 on February 28, 2016, 02:12:35 AM: This chest has my lust up, 1st quarter 18th century, Connecticut, original paint, snipe hinges but, feet are replaced which i am counting on to keep price down. There are several Penn painted chests in outstanding condition at same sale that are 5 figure type chests so good luck to me on this wonderful example of early Conn work! Ex Stewart Gregory collection, last sold at his estate sale at Sotheby in 1979.
UPDATE: Sold for 6K, i lost again!

Some damage on one side,, how is the other side ?? Are you thinking about 2.5K or slightly less ?? Just my guess ??

Post by: jacon4 on February 28, 2016, 08:05:16 AM: Yes, if you look close, the feet from floor to chest cabinet is replaced, you can see a line plus the paint is slightly different color. This is typical paint decoration from Conn shore at the turn of 17th-18th century, it's much more "flowery" than chests from Mass. for instance which tend to be more "mannerist" or jacobean in decoration style. Here is an example of a Conn shore chest that sold 5 or 6 years ago for 20K , circa 1700.

It sold for MUCH MORE than that at Sotheby sale in 1979 but hey, that was a different time plus it was owned by a famous collector, Stewart Gregory.

Post by: jacon4 on February 28, 2016, 08:27:28 AM: 30 mins to go! Here is chest that's on catalogue cover at this sale, a 5 figure chest even in these times, very good condition, typical Penn german chest decoration in the 18th century.
UPDATE: Sold for 70K. I was a bit surprised, went for more than i thought!

I also had my eye on a paint decorated Penn hanging corner cupboard, 1st quarter 19th century, good condition but, crown molding at top was missing. estimate was 2-3k, hammer price? 22k !!!!! This cupboard cost someone over $25,000. today.

I do not buy to sell so that is an advantage however, i do think about resale value. It would have to be something that i could not live without for me to pay 3-4 or 5 times the resale value. Take that little hanging cupboard above, no way is it worth 25k in today's market but, that is what it cost yesterday to buy.
