Well,, the first three pics are identical !! What we need now are details !! Open one of the drawers and take a pic of the dovetail joints on the side where the drawer front attaches to the side piece !! The pulls and hardware as well as one pic of the inside !! Just open the bottom door and take one of the inside !! Better light would help !! I know its too heavy to get a pic of the back,,isn`t it ?? And where did you post the history as you know it ?? I have not seen that yet !! And what is your geographical location ?? U.S. or somewhere else ??
-
im in central cali, i took a bunch of detailed shots like you asked for the next day after these were taken and i got some of the back as well ill stop by tammys and get help posting them, the history of original owner is at the historical society, my mother ran it as a restaurant for about 30 yrs and had quite a bit of info, i just remember the menues stating the piece was made by consignment and shipped over from i think europe it said and he might have sent the wood to match the home, he was the owner of a saw mill or more than one, and his big home was built using finest examples of imported woods. ill try and get more pics in an hour or two for you
-
Those dovetail pics will help date it,,at least a little bit !! I do not think it European,, I think Indonesia or that area !! I am guessing its Mahogany or Teak ?? Hard to tell as dark as the pics are !! My guess is about 1920`s !!

-
I see a Griffin, a pineapple and a Green Man! Looks European to me so far....
-
I think it is too KC,, now that I can see the figures better !! Couldn`t tell if griffins,, looked more like dragons in first pics !! Still need dovetail pics or if different construction however the drawer fronts are attached to the side piece !! Haven`t seen any in the last ones posted that looked like it !! That wood is looking like oak !!
-
There are 2 coy carvings on it
-
When you say "coy" do you mean the fish "koi"?
-
I am wondering too !! Koi fish would not be European,, we are back to Asian !!
-
The Griffins fit with Asia too! Hmmmm!
-
This is Flashback on tammys phone ya if you zoom in just below the griffin on top you can see the koi pretty good on either side the face fish and designs defiantly look Asian at least influenced the drawer pull in the middle reminds me of some American federal type emblem my sister said she used to have to tell customers that a mr baker built the house in 1903 then she got foggy about where the sideboard came from but it's pretty well documented you can see in the pic I added of the broken wheel it appears to be more of a mahoggany than cherry to my untrained eye my sister recalled her speech did list the wood etc I'll do more digging and send more pics today thank you for all the help eventually I'll be considering options to sell it try my name is james
-
Try to get those dovetail joints if you can !! That secondary wood is oak still not sure about the exterior but possibly mahogany with oak secondary !! Sure would make it a heavy piece !! I am sticking with Asian,, there is just something about it that does not say it was made in Europe !! Fairly sure of the 1920`s era as I said before !! The Green Man does not fit with that theme but we will wait and see !!

Actually those aren't koi, they are dolphins!
Try searching Renaissance Revival sideboards/furniture with griffins, dolphins, greenman, etc.
Take a look at this table with greenman and dolphin carved in it!

Guesses late victorian english, the carved face is often called "north wind", a popular figure in victorian times. Not a clue about value but here in the states, not a lot because of fashion trends and the size of piece not to mention not american.
-
Ahh,, those pics are much better !! I think,, now that I can see it better, that it could be English or French !! Not that much distance between the two countries !! Many things made in France are found in the UK but few items made in the UK are found in France for some reason !! Still same time period I think !!
-
This is Flashback (James), thanks a lot folks I appreciate it.I found the house was built in 1906 and the owner was the assistant manager of a local mill he was about 47 at the time I believe and died around 1920 at the latest so I would assume he bought the piece fairly early in that period but need to do more research. You sure seem to have nailed it spot on so far. No idea on a ball park price range?
On a side note I took some pics of another piece I have and will ask Tammy to post, it has a stamp on a drawer I could only partially read something Hart n Son cabinet maker something Stone Gate Leicester it's a nice clean hutch or sideboard server type thing, ill post soon.
-
Wow KC! Looks vary similar. I'm going to take your advice and google those key words. Are you interested in brokering some things?
-
When you post the next piece,, take a good well lighted pic of front and back then get the details as you did on the last pics here and include the hardware !! That will help us !! Where are you located ?? UK or U.S. ??
-
Yes, definitely dolphins and not koi! :)
Late Renaissance Revival. Country of origin looks like France. Construction ca. 1890-1910. Looks like walnut and oak. Depending on where you are, I'd say the value is something like $1K to $1500.
-
My thoughts are a English Sideboard (even tho' it has French influence in it). Here in my neck of the woods they sell from $1,500 to $3,000 depending on the quality/condition of the wood, size, design. Being in the south there are so many more homes that can accommodate the larger pieces and still do. From my experience and seeing the market here in Texas I would see this coming in around the $1,700 to $1,800 range these days (if the wood is in good shape).
The carvings are not sinister and are pleasing (some get really stern/grotesque and fall into the Gothic era).

Thanks KC Im in California. Ill try and post the other pics today as well. Theres actually also a 4x8 ships hatch table w 2 4x4 end tables, a nice long 10 ft table of a ships bell from The Hougue Arrow it has available pictures of all stages of its construction because it was the biggest of its kind and pics of 5000 people turned up for its launch, not sure if that helps the value but it would be nice as an entry to a sea food place. If theres interest ill include photos of those as well. Thanks again

We are interested in seeing all your antique pieces. You do realize though that we are not buyers we are all here with information to offer and to learn about antiques from others. Your sideboard is very beautiful and I have learned a lot on this style just from this thread! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Parts of it look English but others don't. Could it not be American ?
