Title: Can't identify this antique - any help?
Post by: floridabarbie on April 25, 2016, 12:56:02 PM
This was my grandmothers, she kept her sewing items in it. It's very fragile and falling apart    It feels like it's sewn together heavy paper.  Has anyone ever seen one of these?  Any name for it?

Oh yes,, I have seen them !! But have never heard them called anything other than sewing basket or yarn basket depending on if it was used for crochet yarn or sewing items !!  Not sure how the first ones came about but they were a craft project that many did with left over/vintage wall paper and posterboard or with empty cereal boxes !! We also used wallpaper sample books in the 60`s and yarn to sew the seams !!

Awesome!  I can't find anything similar to this in any searches I do.  I assumed it was sewn by her because there are no markings to identify any store/manufacturer anywhere on it.

You can be pretty sure its a home craft item when each section has a different pattern wall paper !! This craft has had several revivals over the years !!  Its still a neat and useful one !!  You can probably put it back together easily !! Just takes school glue or any waterbased glue and thread !!  That looks like quilting thread for the seams !! The heavy type !!

Oh my goodness...haven't seen one of these in a very long time.  Yep, Mart is correct.  They were made with wallpaper samples or linoleum (depending on what people had available).  Have even seen them made with leather.

Oh, and remember some were made with greeting cards and/or postcards!
Found a fancier crocheted one here

KC

Sending you a Karma Point.  I can remember making some of those items from Christmas cards. You are great at finding the perfect examples.

Thanks Pelady!  Once I got the brain cells to remembering I had to find examples to back it up!  :)
