Title: Help to identify a porcelain mark
Post by: Mookie on May 30, 2016, 01:29:57 PM
Hi everyone,

I was left a patch/snuff box by my Mother and I'm trying to find out who the maker was.

I've scoured the internet and reference books etc and at first I thought it might be Meissen but now I'm not so sure!

If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be very grateful.

Thank you!

Can you please post a picture of the entire box as well?  So many maker's marks were "copied".  The picture will help!

Of course, sorry, didn't think!

The only info I have of this is that it came down through the family from my paternal grand parents.

Hope the photos help!

Hate to ask but can you make them larger !!  At that tiny size they do not enlarge for me !!  About 1500 KB should be good !!  Can go to 3000kb but not sure what you use to take the pics,, didn`t want them to blur !!

Well, it looks like a Meissen mark, but those can be easily replicated and very hard to identify the date. You will probably need to provide some large, clear photos of the box since it would be hard to know if the mark is genuine or not.

Yes It does look like Meissen but I think it is not !!  Meissen used a similar mark with a dot but they placed the dot between the hilt of the swords !!  This one is below the swords !!

You can see the correct marks above !!  Scroll down to the Chelsea England-London and you will see another like yours !!  That is not to say the Chelsea Factory made yours but it is the correct mark with the dot below the crosspieces !!  There may be others that are similar !!  Meissen was one of the most copied/faked marks of that time !!  The Meissen Factory filed suit in 1888 to stop the look-a-likes !!

Sad to say, but I agree as well. It's still a very attractive little box, a nice family heirloom.

Mart, I've always thought of you as a squirrel with perfectly good eyesight!  :D

I was sorry the box didn't turn out to be real Meissen.
