sugarcube5419, bottom of what?  There aren't any pictures of the bottom of the cup or saucer and I don't see any writing on the side of the cup.

Hi Sugarcube,

I collect flying turkey, blue Phoenix, noritake Howo bird.  I have a few pieces similar to yours with with the same mark on the bottom.  I have a few photos but not of the bottom.  I will try and take some after the weekend. The tea pot and creamer in the first pic. and the leaf shaped bowls and dish in the second.

PetLady how you recognized the mark as one you have astounds me..do you think Japanese?  Did not know the birds names either..very good of you to write and inform me.  Would they both be maybe the same era?

Hi Sugarcube

Yes Japanese.  Lots of different manufacturers, and a wide variety of quality. Started in 1890's marked Nippon.
Over 125 marks have been recorded for the group called "Pheonix Bird".  I would call yours Flying Turkey.  I recognized It right away because it is one of the few pattern where the bird is facing to its right.  The Phoenix in most patterns looks left back over its shoulder.

The mark is of Kato Shubei II (1848-1903), a known producer from Seto. Late 19th c. It reads "Hakuundo Shubei Sei", it means "Made for the White Cloud Hall by Shubei".

Mat,

Thank you for reading that.  You are so great at deciphering anything with Asian characters!  Where are you from and how many languages can you Read?  A karma point for you!
