Title: Mirror 2
Post by: kathyv43 on July 27, 2016, 06:14:47 PM
This is a mirror that hangs over fireplace in my living room that I bought a while back. Just wondering if anyone knows time period, etc. Thanks.

Love it! Looks like mahogany, neoclassical ca. 1890-1910. I'd expect to pay $200-$250 for it. Nice!!

It also looks like its beveled, and the shape reminds me of the stunning R.J. Horner mahogany bedroom dresser mirrors from the 1890s. I'm a sucker for that stuff... ;D

It is beveled. I saw it in a local shop and went back a few days later and got it. It is a pretty mirror.

Yeah, I had that thought re: dresser mirrors as well.

Are there dowel holes in the side of the mirror frame?

No there are no dowels holes unless someone was really good and filled them in...I see no sign of that. However, I noticed on each side where it starts to curve at the bottom...there is piece of wood it looks like filling in a space that is probably 2 inches long and maybe 1/4-3/8 inches wide.

Check the back for holes if it has a wood backing !! Usually 2 on each side !!

Some mirror trivia.

Long ago, I purchased at a local auction house, .... an Oak framed dresser mirror similar to the one pictured below (just the mirror, not the dresser).

The one I purchased was a little longer and a tad narrower than the one pictured, had a fancier crown filigree, had beveled glass and was almost “black” in color like old oak furniture gets.

Someone had repaired/replaced a 3-inch portion of the lower right part of the frame with a new piece of oak but didn’t bother to stain it to match. Thus it looked gawd awful and the reason I only had to pay $20 for it.

I refinished it to Golden Oak and hung it on the wall in my Antique Shop ….. and since I really didn’t want to sell it, I put a price of $78 on it, figuring no one was gonna pay that much for it.

Well now, every now n’ then, someone would come in the Shop, stare at that mirror for 2 or 3 minutes ……. and then continue looking at other things, ...... and every time, after that happened, .... I would increase my “selling price” by $20 or $25.

Eventually that “selling price” had increase to $275 and I thought my mirror was safe.

But then one afternoon a dapper dressed gentleman came into my Shop, ….. stared at my mirror for about 5 minutes, …. then turned around and counted me out $275 in cash, ….. took his mirror off my wall and left with it.

;D ;D Lesson learned. Never put a price on something unless you are sure you want to sell it.

When I first saw the mirror, I could not believe it was only $65. I was in the middle of moving, so I didn't purchase but kept thinking to myself that someone would purchase it soon at that price. I went back a few days later and bought it. I have no intention of selling it unless someone gives me an offer I can't refuse and since its hanging in my house and I don't have a lot of visitors...I can't see that happening. Lol

No holes on the back except each side where wire is attached...one hole on each side directly under where wire is attached also.

Well, the manufacturer of your mirror might have made them for dressers in the morning and for hanging on the wall in the afternoon. It doesn't detract from the beauty of your mirror and it's value.
