Title: What were these dishes used for?
Post by: ssf2 on August 25, 2016, 03:48:28 PM
I have several small, square dishes. Not sure what they may have been used for. Any ideas? They are about 4 inches across and about 1 inch tall. They are Schleiger 1152, but I don't know which variant. Any ideas on that as well? Each one has different parts, but they appear to all be of the same pattern.

Scroll down here and see other pieces in the square shape !!  I like them much better than the round in same pattern !!

Mart, I am not thinking butter pat dish.  She said 4" and 1" depth.  Butter pats are smaller typically 2" to under 3" square and 1/2" height.  I have seen some 4" square bone dishes but Schleiger typically had the crescent shaped ones.  Salt Dips were typically smaller than 3".

Possibly bread/biscuit, fruit dish?  They even made vanity/dresser pieces.....  Looking....

ssf2, What do you mean by

Can you please post more pictures?

The flowers are not all the same type on all the dishes, but the colors and style are the same. so it looks like this pattern has lots of bits and pieces to it and they chose a few for each dish. So on a larger item you might have all of the 'parts' to the pattern. But because the dishes are small they only used a few and not all of them have the same bits of the larger pattern. Does that make sense?

The photos are too large to post the way I usually do, so I am trying it this way. Hopefully this works and they are clear.

I looked up the butter pats for Haviland in this pattern and others and they seemed to all be around 3 to 3 1/2 inches depending on who is doing the measuring !!  Possibly a dual use ??
Seems there were different sizes depending on the pattern !!  Smallest I found was 2 3/4" !!

I am sorry to say I started the multiple exclamation marks years ago and was scolded a few times for it.  Even corrected on correct writing (my mom was a school principal and believe me she tried!!!!!!)  But, if you met me face to face you would known I am a live-live-to-the-fullest type of gal and my life is full of exclamations (some good and some not so good)!  :)

Ha !!  Always knew you were just like me !!

Back to the dishes,, this gives the standard sizes !!  Could these have been measured wrong ??  But they did make a "deep" butter pat !!

Hi ssf2,

Are there only 4 of these dishes?  These remind me of something my Grandmother used to have many sets of, what she called Card or Nut Set.  When playing bridge or whist each person had a dish for nuts/candy etc.  Often they would have 4 slightly different patterns. Perhaps they are something of the same ilk?

Could be PeLady !!  If this is a continuing pattern the arrangement can be different but all will be the same flowers !!  Didn`t think to check the plates !!

Pelady, I think you might have a great idea there.  I was searching Hostess Sets, Porcelain Nut Sets and so many of the individual dishes are 4" to 5"!

I only have 4. I thought maybe they were  a sauce or berry dish, or maybe part of a nut set but wasn't sure about the sizes. They do measure 4 inches to the outside, and from the table to the top they are about 1 inch deep. Look too big to be butter pats to me, as all the ones I have seen are smaller.
I keep looking online for something in the same colors to compare them to, but most of what I find is the gray variety. Seems the green/blue/deep salmon color is rarer.

According to the Haviland Online link I posted,, Its common that the patterns are not identical on all items even if they are the same !!  That site has some interesting info !!
