Purchased this grey vase among other things last night ::).
I have no idea about the markings on this or if it is even old and am hoping you can help me out.
As always any and all help is greatly appreciated.
-
Maybe mid century or so !! I don`t think its older than that !! Looks like some numbers around the edge of the bottom which is probably shape or mold number !! Is the bottom completely unglazed ??
-
Yes, definitely not old. I'm thinking 21st century.
-
Yes, the bottom is unglazed.
-
Is this a rather small vase ??
-
Yes, it is small. Measures 8" tall and 5" at the widest point.
-
Can we get a closer pic of that mark ?? Dampen your finger and rub it across the mark and see if it will show up better !! Thought it might be Purinton pottery because of the mold line across the bottom !! But they produced mostly hand painted wares !! Back during the 40`s and fifties they also made and sold to several other companies including Napco !! Need to get a better look t the mark if possible !!
-
Gladly Mart. Thanks so much for the interest you are showing in my cute little grey vase. I do think your idea worked and the mark shows up a bit more. Still, it doesn't look like anything to me.
-
It does but unfortunately not enough to read !! We are just going to have to guess at this one !! Since the mold line on the bottom is typical of Purinton Pottery,, my guess is that maybe they made the blank for another decorating company !! Could be Napco or any one of several they sold to !! Many of them sold florist wares and I think thats maybe what this was !!
-
When I first viewed the picture my mind thought of a modern take on Celadon style glazed pottery. Even tho they do have grey celadon (not that common) the style is definitely not that of what you would normally see from Korea, etc.
I like it alot!

I love my new vase, it is going into my bathroom when it gets reno'd, but I will admit if it had been worth any money I would have parted with it ( renos aren't cheap)
All info is as greatly appreciated as you liking my vase too :D :D
Have a great long weekend.

I like anything that reminds me of the early part of the 20th century !! My guess is that this little vase is maybe late 30`s or 40`s !!

Well, which is it? I still say 21st century. ;) :D :D

Would the crazing be any kind of tell on this? The whole thing is crazed, inside and out. I did do a bit of research on crazing and am still not really clear on whether it is just a poor glazing or firing job or age, :o :o :o
-
Crazing can be caused by many things !! Less than quality glaze when made,,improper storage,,heating and cooling of the pottery,,and are just a few !! Many things are made today and chemically crazed !!
-
Sounds like that would make my little vase worth less, not more :-\ oh well I still like it.
I have a small white onyx cup and saucer, not a mark on them at all, but surprisingly heavy for the size. With no markings is there any point in sending pictures? Your opinion please.
-
Yes !! Send pics and one close up !!

Look through all these finds !! You just never know !!

My white onyx cup and saucer. Saucer is 4.25" in diameter. Cup 2.5" in diameter and 1.5" tall. I did do some research and it is my belief it is white onyx. Interestingly enough I found two other identical cups and saucers on ebay. One says it is a Chinese hand carved cup and saucer in some kind of hard stone, early 1900's or even later. $50.USD The other was hand carved white jade. $65.USD
Neither of the cups or saucers had any marking on the bottoms. As you can tell by measurements these are very small. I think too small to be demitasse but I could be wrong about that.
Both those guys on ebay had really high approval ratings, 98 and 100% respectively. I am baffled how one could say Chinese hand carved without markings but who am I to argue. I will leave that to the experts on this forum.
Thanks

Oh !! Nice !! Is that a lip on the cup ??

Certainly looks like similar striations in these !!
-
Here are better pictures of cups. Yes they do look similar.
-
What you may have is an espresso cup !! Larger than demitasse but smaller than coffee cup !!
-
And I thought it was too big for demitasse. So, what do you think of the hand carved in China theory? It is a cute little cup and saucer but more of a dust collector I am afraid.
-
I think its very nice !! So translucent you can see through it !! Are you going to sell it ?? Looks better than the clunky things I saw on ebay !!
-
I like it too! Very unique! That stone would normally be heavy...but with it being thinned so much to be translucent is it regular cup weight or heavy for it's size?
-
I would not have a clue as to where it was made !! China is as good a place as any !! Saw some heavy stuff from Pakistan but this is much finer work !!
-
It is most definitely heavy for its size. I would part with it that's for sure, there is no sentimental value for me. I guess it is hard to come up with a value, and description without knowing anything for sure, that is why I was surprised at the ebay ad for the same thing, hand carved in China, early 1900's or even earlier his ad stated. Sounds a bit bogus to me.
Oh well. The tortoise shell collection has all my attention now. Interesting, amazing yet somewhat disturbing as well but I anxiously check the feed a few times a day :-\

I have seen these in the past. Search Antique Carved Onyx Coffee Cups, or Tea Set or Espresso Cups. Now back in the past the buzz word was alabaster. So you might try it that was as well.

Here is a set (with brass) that sold for a "Best Offer" so we don't know the ending price

Those cups with the brass are beautiful, I found the selling price $299 USD as far as I can tell.
The cup and saucer I have, while quite translucent are also quite heavy for the size.
Thanks so much for all the comments and help.
So greatly appreciated. Have a great day :D
