Title: Any Antique Mirror Enthusiasts out there? Please Help!
Post by: Sarakdaboo on September 11, 2016, 12:14:55 PM
Hi there!
So I have this a antique shaving mirror that I found a while back and bought for $1. I didn't even know it was a mirror when I found it, I just thought it looked pretty neat!  After doing some online searching, I found out that it is an antique shaving mirror with scalloped glass, but that's about all I could find out about it! It seems that the frame is made from copper, and I haven't been able to find anything like it in my web searches. Can someone please tell me more about it?  I think it's really cool and would love to know more about it!  Thanks in advance!  I've attached photos below :)
Warmly,
Sarah

I did see this one in my searching, the bracket looks similar, but it is made of cast iron and there isn't really any information about it :(. I was hoping to see if anyone knew the company that made them back in the day and just to really find out more about it.

Thanks for the welcome, Mart :). I'm unsure of what the letters are on the bracket, as they are a bit hard to read. From what I can make out the first letter is Either a 'D' a 'P' or an 'O'.  The second letter looks like an 'A'.  The third looks like an 'M' or a 'T' and the fourth letter looks like it might be a 'U'. Ive tried googling every variation I could come up with, but I didn't have any luck :(.  I was hoping maybe showing the brackets would help identify it!

The glass in the mirror measures to be just under 5 1/2" long (14.5cm) and just under 3 3/4 inches wide (9.25cm). The total length, including the handle is 10 1/4".
Thanks for your reply!

Whats on the bracket then would be Pat`d !!  I found one patent for the brackets that hold the mirror around the same time !! But it gave the date patent was applied for,,I didn`t see an approval date !!  Problem is by 1899 there were so many different types of shaving mirrors already that most of the patents were just for improvements to the existing ones !!

It was designed by a couple of guys from PA. Not their only patented design.

Would it be bad if I wanted to restore it?  It's not really worth much, right?  I just don't want to devalue it if it is!

Not worth enough for you to retire on !!  With the damage to the mirror,,I did see some chips didn`t I,, I say go for it !!  As-is between $35. and $50.  Should not be much to have the mirror re-silvered !! Just polish the metal with a good quality silver polish !!  None of the quickie products !! A good glass shop may be able to make the chips less visible by grinding and smoothing lightly !!

Sounds like you'll pay more than it's worth to restore it, but sometimes that's the way to go, especially if you love it and want to keep it for the duration.

Probably so but her investment is only a dollar so far !! It would probably bring it up to its current value !!
