Hi everyone
I have this beautiful carved chair which i am going to restore.
Does anybody know the period it is from?
Any help would be appreciated, Many thanks

Looks like Eastlake, from the 1880s or 90s.
I'd say you've got a great project idea. Post pictures when you're finished!

Im thinking it could well be a late 19th century Prie Dieu?

How tall are the legs? Can you give a better face on picture to see how pronounced the legs are?
It looks to be a side chair to me. Shorter legs to accommodate for women in the long heavy skirts.
A Prie Dieu is more pronounced in the lowered seating appearance. Also, there is typically a pronounced level at the top of the chair to lean on (many were padded/upholstered but there were alot that just had a increased wooden platform area.)

About 1890`s Eastlake slipper chair !! On looking closer those legs were not made like that !! Pretty sure they started out taller !! You would not have found that blunt end on a regular chair,, nor on a slipper chair !! But it was not unusual for people to alter them according to what they needed !!

Looks like a parlor chair that was lowered to accommodate a small child.

Years ago I was buying some items from an older lady, and included was a Victorian era chair which had its legs shortened. I commented about it being a youth chair, and she corrected me. “No, no” she said; “That was Mama’s chair. We had a large family, and there was usually a baby on the floor that Mama tended to. All the while she did her mending and sewing, sitting in that chair”. Thinking about that, in lieu of a playpen, if the baby was on the floor a short chair would make sense.

I agree that the legs look cut down. Most Prie Dieu or prayer kneelers with carving had a religious motif - often a cross. Most Did not have a padded back. They would have either a shelf for a book or a padded arm rest. No signs of that on this piece.
