Title: Took the plunge and bought a historic house!
Post by: talesofthesevenseas on December 27, 2016, 05:52:50 PM
Well, it is time for yet another adventure and this one is gonna be a doosie! In the course of "dream shopping" online, my fiance and I stumbled upon the most amazing 220-year-old stone house built in 1790, very near to where my ancestors on my father's side lived. We talked about it non-stop for about two weeks and decided that we either had to stop talking about it or go see it. We went to see it and fell head over heels for the place. We decided to take the plunge and are in the final stages of the purchase now. We are moving to Kingsport Tennessee in April! The house did great on the inspection. It was built like a fortress and has been lovingly cared for all these years. Here are some old pictures and some new ones. You can see the interior and more on the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjxEYx6STu0&t=150s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjxEYx6STu0&t=150s)

How exciting for you!  I am so happy for you on this new journey/adventure!  (Hope the house has good internet so you can keep us posted!)

What a beautiful historic home!  How big is the property?

Don't think there are any oceans close-by so that you can do any more ship re-enactments!  :(

Thanks KC! I actually haven't done any pirate reenacting for years, but have been doing Civil War, Victorian, Edwardian and Rev War era among others. The house is on 2.3 acres.

Mart, Yes, it is on the Holston River. It is on a knoll overlooking the river, but well out of reach of any flooding. There are some interior pictures on the video, but I'll post some when we get moved in. We are waiting until April to make the move so that we don't have to move the horse in winter and so that we don't have to make an inter-state move in the snow.

Wow, you don't do anything by halves! :) :)

I took a video tour of Kingsport's downtown. It looks like a nice place, where they value their historic buildings.

Fantastic-looking house. Love it! I know you'll post photos of your progress.

We are several miles outside of Kingsport proper, on the Virginia/Tennessee border.

What I like is they kept the interior close to what it would have looked like then !!

Looks like a dream home ! Is it connected to the side of the family i looked into ?

Any military history to it ?

Mart, I like that they kept the interior true to the look of the house too. It was upgraded in the 1980s, but they really did a good job of not modernizing it. Especially in the kitchen. Actually there is another large hearth behind the wall that we have an option of uncovering if we chose to. However it is right next to the existing oven on the line between the dining room and kitchen. We're pondering it, as I would love to have an 18th century cooking hearth there with cast iron. We are thinking we will go through a cupboard and shine a light back there and see what we have, then decide if it's worth it, since I love the kitchen as it is.

Ipcress, my father's ancestors lived right across the river in Hawkins County TN. The ones that you looked up were on my mother's side, so the house has no relation to them. My dad's people would have known it though.

Yes, the house does have a minor military history to it. During the Civil War the Confederate forces were sure that they could hold the town of Kingsport at the Holston river, because it was too deep and wide for horses and artillery to cross. However there were some locals who knew that just two miles up the river, right at my house on the Tennessee/Virginia border, was Cloud's Ford. Cloud's Ford had been a river crossing used by hunters, trappers, Native American's etc. for centuries because it's only about knee deep at that point. On December 12th, 1864 the Federal troops simply detoured two and a half miles upriver, waded across, came up through my yard, and overtook the town of Kingsport.

If you do not own a metal detector,,I suggest you buy one !!  Finding artifacts from that crossing would be amazing !!

I've got a metal detector and had been thinking the same thing. It's an old one that treats all metals equally from gold to beer cans.

That is a good thing !!  The descriminators sometimes miss the good things !!  But they have probably improved them in the last 20 years or so !!
