Very unusual to see two days without a post so just testing to see if the forum is working.

Looks fine, everyone must just be busy.
-
Yup, me thinks they are busy, busy. :) :) :)
Good Friday was yesterday and preparations for Easter dinner tomorrow .... has to be completed today.
-
It happens, not a lot but it gets slooooooooooooooooo ooow on here. Plus, if one does not comment on a thread, you don't get emails about replies on that thread so sometimes it's days or maybe a week or more that i check back into forum to see if there is something of interest. Additionally, this forum depends on new posters finding forum and asking about their object, that runs in cycles, it seems forum is in a down cycle! Kinda like old furniture, absolutely in a down cycle!
Another possibility, it's SPRING! everyone is at gardening center or hardware store indulging in their personal SPRING FEVER project.
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!
-
We are having baby chicks hatching under a little mother hen today, so a perfect way to say: Happy Easter!
-
Happy Easter All! Here's hoping that all the "forum family" is having a fabulous time of year - hopefully with your "other" family!
Lots of family in from out of town for Easter/Spring Break and the weeds have been calling my name!
Garden Center next week!
-
Working in Chicago this weekend. Perfect weather, but no time for antiques! :)
-
I am in the garden this time of year !! I do check in a few times daily but not much going on so back to the weeds !! Thats weeds with an (s) !! Happy Easter everyone !!
Cooking a pork roast with new potatoes,, fresh cauliflower,,and spinach salad tomorrow !! Anyone want to pop in for Easter,,?? Haven`t decided on desert yet !!
-
Been busy myself. Still a chance of frost here in Massachusetts, so no planting yet. I have raked and wheelbarrows 16 tarps full of leaves over the last week.
-
Pelady,,, Throw them in a bin and make your own compost !!
-
Pelady,,, I gave up raking leaves ...... when they invented the gasoline powered "rotary" lawnmower.
And iffen you want to “compost” your shredded leaves ……. then use a lawnmower with a grass "catcher", to wit:
-
We get so many leaves from our neighbors trees as well (wind patterns) that it would choke that little push mower! Bought the better half one of those commercial 0-radius mulching mowers years ago. Have to mow with that then come back over with a catcher - otherwise there is so much mulch the grass would die! LOL
-
Yeah, Charlotte is known as the "city of trees", almost half the land area is trees so a mower is not going to cut it around here, i use a leaf blower to get them in a pile, it's the only good way. Course, i do that in fall not spring. That city of tree thing is great until NOW! it's pollen heaven around here and very heavy, you can see clouds of pollen in the wind and it turns EVERYTHING outside a greenish color.
-
I have done nothing but sneeze, cough and blow my nose for weeks !! No matter what color your car is yellow is predominate around here !! People are getting lost at Wal-Mart,, all cars look alike !!
-
LOLOL Mart you are too funny! I gotta say I never noticed the yellow around here until the past 2 days and it is coating everything!
One of my brothers lives in Blythewood, SC and he has sent pictures of everything coated yellow!
-
LOL !! And yellow is my least favorite color !!
-
If you have allergies, Charlotte NC is a BIG NO NO in april when the trees are doing their thang! This pic is a street in one of Charlotte's oldest neighborhoods, Meyers Park, right next to downtown. The proportions in this pic are correct, everything is rather tiny next to these oak trees.
-
Texas is the pollen capitol of the world I think !! That is a pretty view !!
-
Now, this shocked me!

Well, you know it's JUMPIN in here when the hot topic of the day is pollen! I say the old women ran off the posters!
Speaking of trees, the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi river is, The Angel Oak, in Charleston SC is about 500 years old....
-
Is this the oldest living oak? I could have sworn there were bald cypress (several) that are older?
-
Is this the oldest living oak?
Yes, i think it is, it's a southern live oak and is believed to be the oldest living thing in eastern US (some estimate angel oak age at 1500 years old). I don't know about bald cypress or if any research has been done on them. The oldest trees on earth are bristlecone pines, there is one in the White Mountains in Calif that is reported to be 5000 years old. It's location is kept secret by the US Forest Service to keep anyone from messing around with the tree.
-
No one really knows how old these trees really are exactly and, i am guessing they don't want to damage these ancient trees by taking core samples which could harm them. Heres another pic of angel oak with kids standing at base to give some perspective. If you ever happen to be in Charleston SC, a visit to this tree on John's island is well worth it, pic's just can't capture the majesty of this tree. It is truly a very impressive sight in person.

When George Washington was surveying in western Virginia he found a few big trees, to wit:
He (George W) encamped on the Virginia side on November 1, and had proceeded up the Great Kanawha about ten miles when his journal reads: “Proceeded up the river with the canoe about 4 miles farther, and then encamped, and went a hunting; killed 5 buffaloes and wounded some others, and three deer. This country abounds in buffalo and wild game of all kinds, as also in all kinds of wild fowl, there being in the bottom a great many small grassy ponds, or lakes, which are full of swans, geese, and ducks of different kinds.”
On descending towards the Ohio River again, he describes finding a sycamore tree about sixty yards from the river that measures forty-four feet and ten inches in circumference three feet above the ground. This corresponds to a diameter of close to fourteen feet. Fifty feet away is another sycamore measuring thirty-one feet around.

Wow !! Those trees are amazing !!

test
edit * Ah - it's working again ! I've been trying to post for a couple of days without success.
-
Hmmmmmm, well, if Ipcress has not been able to post, that tells me that it wasn't the old women that ran off the posters, BAM!. Maybe others haven't been able to post either, it seems this site has had more and more issues like this in the recent past.
-
Notified Ed there was a problem and he worked his magic to get it up and running! Thanks Ed!
-
I only get to check in on the forum once in a few weeks and there haven't been any topics that I know enough about to render advice . Just read that informational on how to print a photo on a piece of ivory and I'm thinking, where else could you go and get info like that except on a finely run forum like this? Nothing wrong with this forum!
-
Hey there Jondar !! You sure have not been here in a long while !! Glad to see you back !! You do not have to offer advice to join in the conversation !! Not one of us can say we are the sharpest rock in the pile,,Most times its a group effort !! We need everyone !! Sometimes a little tidbit found in the course of other searches can be quite useful !! We appreciate all the little tidbits people offer !!
-
Hey Jondar! Great to see you here! Karma to you for applauding the forum for coming up with some great information. Don't forget...you are part of it and have information to help out I am sure!!
I had never heard of that before either. Knew that pieces were finished with photos but never knew the length/process of doing it before. Whew!
-
Mart and KC. Thanks for the kind words. They are appreciated.
