Looks like an English mark to me,, maybe import mark !!
-
My first impression is Vietnamese, but I have to look at it again tomorrow.
-
Maybe the mark is upside down and reads "Vietnam" and Dona"?
-
I couldn`t see it well enough to read it !! Looks like its smeared which leads me to think import mark!! They are usually on top of the glaze and are often smudged !!
-
Mart, compare the mark on this one, I think it is the same: http://www.instappraisal.com/appraisal/vietnam-dona-vase The pieces with this or similar marks of Dona Artexport Saigon, Vietnam are all dated 1950s-1970s, and I guess that is about right. I do not think there was much export after the war in Vietnam, and older seems unlikely.
-
Is this really mid 20th Vietnamese ? The quality looks too good.
-
Didn`t think about the mark being upside down but it is the same mark !! Thanks Mat !!
I agree Ipcress,, quality is good,, thats why I thought English pottery !!
-
Ipcress, how would you date it? The other possibility, IMO, is that it is very new. But I could not find any totally reliable info about that company. I have seen quite a few in similar quality in thrift stores, but always without info on them, of course...
-
One hint could be that variations of that mark have the name of Saigon, which was renamed in Ho-Chi-Minh City in 1976, so a date before that seems likely to me.
-
The date might be right, Mat. It doesn't appear to be faked crazing on the base, and there are other examples of quality pottery bearing ( what should logically be ) earlier maker's marks. However, i think they're more recent but the one posted earlier in the thread has just " aged " due to storage.

That's by the same company but i cannot find any info ( although i searched only for about two minutes ).
This one is also Dona, as fresh as the morning dew yet bares the " earlier " mark

I expect they're a modern company producing quality vases for export. And i quite like them !!!!
-
I wonder if this enterprise is related, As the name "Artexport" appears in combination with "Dona" on some marks: https://www.gmdu.net/corp-373494.html They exist since 1964 and are still in business.
-
I have looked at some of their items ,,most are quite nice and well done !! That first one sold for $275. but anything with a dragon on it usually sells better than others !!
-
Nothing I an offer on this one. Think you'uns got this one covered! :)
-
LOL !! Not me !! I could not find my derriere with both hands !! Thats when I ask the smart people !!
