Title: Bone Buddha
Post by: icedgold10 on September 02, 2017, 01:02:00 PM
Need some help with this Buddha I just got at a yard sale.  It's some kind of bone around 12" tall and signed.  I'll put the pics in 2 post because of file size.  Trying to figure out origin, bone type and signature.  Age and value?  Any info would be helpful.  A couple of pieces need to be glued back on but all pieces are present.  Thank you!

I wonder if that isn't actually a Budai figure?

search "netsuke carrying jute bag" and look at images.

Plus...did you do the needle test?  Here's some tips:

Usually the main body is ground bone mixed  with a resin !!  The other smaller pieces are likely Ox bone put together to give it age !!  No bone is solid so that is the only way to get a block large enough to carve into figures !!
Do the needle test on the figure somewhere it will not show !!

I will try the needle test.  The main body seems to be wood clad in the bone.

Well, took a hot needle to it and it left no marks and no scent.

You checked the figure itself ??  Not the bottom ??

I didn't  try it on the bottom.  I tried o. 2 places on the figure.  I think most likely  it is cattle bone.

Ox bone !!  Your pics are too small to enlarge enough to see any grain it may have !!  Bone has a straight grain !!  If there is no grain visible on the main body then it is either ground bone mixed with something or a different material !!
