I've been contacted by an individual that has a small piece of nicely framed art purchased off a TV fine art auction”. He’ll sell it for a fraction of the original cost, but I’m not convinced that it’s even worth that. Being mounted behind Plexiglas with the back sealed, any hands-on examination is not possible. My question being: Is a supposed “guaranteed authentic” Michelangelo engraving (The Creation of Eve) from 1540-1550 really being sold on TV? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Could it be a purchased copy like you would get from The Library of Congress?

If it was a TV auction,, what auction company held the sale !! I think all of the originals from the Sistine Chapel were destroyed ?? Later engravings were done from the artwork not by Michelangelo !! And look at it like this,, it is Michelangelos work which was done in that century !! But chances are it was done in the 1700`s when there was a resurgence in the popularity of the works !! What TV channel was it on ?? Should be widely known if a real fine art sale !!

It's the show that comes on every weekend on one of the shopping channels. I watched it for about a half hour and decided not to get involved with any of their offerings.
The piece I asked about is just a portion of the panel, showing just a single Ignudi.

My two cents on this...if it isn't a legitimate auction house that warrants their claims/items...and your are wanting it for authenticity...pass .
If you are just wanting a piece that is a "reproduction" piece made sometime after the original...to display in your home and make you smile...then consider it!

I watched the "show" again last night for about half-hour, and a small example with the following description finished at about 5 grand supposedly. :o
“Rembrandt Van Rijn Original etching in black Signed Bearded Old Man in a High Fur Cap c1635 Extremely rare and important.”

Because engraving are done from plates, many engravings have been done LONG after an artist death. They have far from the same crispest or value as originals printed by the artist in their lifetime. Technically, they are still RemBrants etc.
I just finished a book on Michelangelo with no mention of engraving or print making. Engravings
of his work were done by other artists later as Mart stated. Example: This print of a Michelangelo design.

I've read a lot of complaints as well. It makes you wonder how their BBB rating is an A+!
