Title: Cast iron horse
Post by: WadeNighswander on October 21, 2017, 03:19:34 AM
Wondering if this cast iron horse is worth anything. It is 10in tall and 12 in long and had a detachable saddle. No markings. ( at least nine I could see, patina is old and dark)
Weighs about 7 1/2 pounds. Who made this?

Verdigris on cast iron ??   Don`t think that happens !!  Is it perhaps brass or bronze ??

Hello,
Its difficult for me to see the exact markings of your horse due to the patina.  However, I did find a bronze horse which matches your measurements and general description on Ebay that sold.  The seller described the item as:

Horse is 10" tall by 12" long. saddle has been damaged and repaired. writing is etched into the horses thigh "to mother and dad from Alberta and Paul New York 1947".

Here is the expired listing:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cast-iron-bronzed-horse-statue-with-removable-saddle-stands-10-034-tall-/181335212607?nma=true&si=8K2qTm9%252FlWUPnLIxRFNhFPhXsLc%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

The item sold for $59.99 in July 2014.

Hope this helps!

The one SophieMarie posted was popular in the 1940`s and 50`s !!  That was back when everyone was having baby shoes bronzed !!  I remember many of them,, but the other one I think is a bit earlier,,maybe 1930 or so !!  I am just going by the way it is made !!  It would be either brass or bronze coated to create the verdigris !!  Looks like it was outside for quite a while or in a garage, barn ect where the weather affected it !!
Don`t clean it !!  That verdigris adds to the value !!

Hi Mart,
I think this may be an Abbotwares horse.  They put them on clocks and radios too.  It looks like they have different finishes.  One of the horses even has a rider on it.  Anyway, here's the link if you'd like to take a look!

Even more here !!  Several different companies made these horses !!  I wonder if the hole that should hold the reins at the mouth goes all the way through !!  Most just had a chain there for reins !!
