Lot of antique or vintage Japanese geisha dinnerware.I'm not sure how old dishes are.Anybody know about this set please let me know.
-
The cups look like Japanese geisha lithopane, BUT the rest of the set (from what I see in photos) looks like something different. Are you sure they go together?
-
I am not sure I understand the photos. Is there a geisha mark on he bottom of the plates? Is the geisha something you only see when held up to the light?

The geisha is on the bottom of the cups in the photo.
-
Yes they all go together, the plates don't have a lithopane but the creamer does, there's no mark at all.
-
Ok, it appears the Geisha lithophane cups were first created in the late 1800’s and production continued until the 1950’s. I've seen tea sets before but not plates. The link below gives more information about geisha lithopane cups and states that a 1950's tea set for four runs about $125 on Etsy.

You beat me SophieMarie !! Fairly common,, the cups are usually the only ones with the lithophane !!

Ditto what the others said about the Geisha showing up in cup bottoms.

KC, Is that like "what they said"?
-
Thanks Mart, all the cups has lithopane
-
Since the transferware covers the plate and saucer bottoms they can`t put the litho !! Has to be on a tranlucent solid color !!

The transfer on the plate bottom would prevent the ability to see the geisha !! The glassware has to be thin !! Above link will sort of explain it !!
-
Ha guess my ditto didn't explain it? LOL Geisha's only show up in bottoms of cups.
Only on see-thru sections can the Geisha show thru - the plates had paint/transfers on them so they wouldn't be translucent.

Mart,
Please translate....
SophieMarie,
Mart didn’t actually mean that ….. they couldn’t …. put the “litho” in the bottoms of the plates and saucers, ….. what she actually meant was, …….. there is absolutely no reason in the world one would want to put a “litho” anywhere except in the bottoms of the tea cups.
I could be wrong about that, though, …… iffen per chance there is/was a big demand from “tea drinkers” who preferred drinking their tea from the saucers and plates rather than from the tea cups.
Thus when they “tilted” the saucer or plate up so the tea would run off into their mouth ….. they could see that pretty “litho”. ::) ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Cogar, you are better than a Google Texan to English translator!!!

The problem with putting the lithograph on the plates or saucers is the transfer which would cover it !! The lithograph is impressed on the bottom of the cups !! When you look through from the top you are seeing it reversed !! Now with a solid color and the light shining through the cup it is easily seen !! But if it were impressed on the bottom then a transfer added to the top of the plate no light would shine through so you could not see the lithograph !! Since it is not common to put a transfer on the cup bottom it was a perfect place for the geisha lithograph !! This is getting confusing,, what were we discussing ??
LOL !! Don`t say it Sophie Marie !! ;D
