Hi,
I have this beautiful Wood Wall Plaque. Very heavy, measuring approximately 20" x 20". . I examined the texture and it appears to be a true wood craving. (Not a resin mold). I picked it up at Goodwill here in Georgia. I cleaned the dust and mildew away. Which left a noticeable patina. Very fine craving, reminds me of an architectural sculpture, there is even a locust bug on the wheat husk. My attempt to research ran sour after finding that I can not determine the origin, ie. Italian, French, English, American etc. I would like to determine the age of craving. Please take a look and I welcome your opinion. Thanks.

I figured you guys wanted to see the "Locust Fly" :D :D :D

Looks like Barley and Hops are being depicted. I would think that it was made for a pub or brewery maybe?

Thx Rauville..First I was thinking Italian Florentine with the red/gold paint??
-
Well,, with the artificial patina I guess its mid century or later !!

Hi Mart....Thanks for chiming in. Please explain artificial patina. I am not sure what you mean? I used a soft brush to remove dust from carving and a damp clothe to remove mold from edges (wood edges). (BTW I believe I misspelled carving in earlier post :o :o :o :o) However it looks authentic ie, patina????

Hi Mart...after your comment I did some research on artificial patina. I somewhat get it now. But still interested in your comment on how to tell artificial patina from genuine. I did run across a similar wood carving with the noted patina.

One thing for sure your comment has opened my mind up a little in researching the history of carving. Thanks.

Mart.....I have you to thank again for your comment, which help me to identify the type of carving. I am now of the opinion that it is a vintage Poly-chrome wood carving. I was at a complete lost before. ::)

When you get that greenish color from an object that should not have verdigris,, you can assume it was antiqued so to speak !!

Does anyone know what type of instrument (with blade) is depicted in carving?

Ooops, Got it, it's a scythe. Thanks for looking.

I figured you guys wanted to see the "Locust Fly"
A lot of people would recognize it as being a Cicada or a “17 year Locust”
Ooops, Got it, it's a scythe. Thanks for looking.
There is also a sickle depicted in the carving
So, there is a sickle, a scythe, a shock of wheat or barley, a locust and a pod or cluster of an unknown “fruit”, [its unknown to me]…….. which is probably the “key” to figuring out what the plaque depicts/portrays.
