Post by: icedgold10 on October 20, 2018, 06:15:35 PM
Trying to figure out who the artist is. Back of the painting says    L A Bigelow art dealers,  Boston  the painting is on board. Any ideas?

I have been going through a few sites, he has some varying signatures. Think I may look up a Boston art dealer and get their thoughts. Since I live in Maine one of the paintings could have made it's way up here

Artist signatures can vary as their career progresses !!  That is the signature on yours !!  Is the painting on canvas ??  The texture looks like a print !!  Can not see the individual brush strokes !!

I did !!  All I could see was the broad surface strokes that should not be on a painting !!

I have seen that one before. It's a print. What does that have to do with brush strokes?

Sorry,, Didn`t get to finish that last post so just put the link !!  Take your painting and hold it in good light at an angle so you can see across the surface !! If you see the broad strokes that do not match the scene on the painting,, it is likely a print !!  I am not sure about yours because the pic does not show well !!  But from what I could see it was indicative of a print !!  In other words when you see the water,, the paint stroke should match it !!   In other words if I paint a tree trunk,, the strokes will match that shape !!  There can be different strokes behind it but not on top of it !!  Hope this is understood !!
Many prints have the texture over the picture so if you run your hand across it,, that is what you feel,, just the texture !!  Rarely does anyone match it to the painting itself !!
Another thing to check is the signature,, that is the last thing painted by the artist !!  You should not see gloss on top of it !! It will be a dull,,not shiny signature !!  Only exception to this is that if the painting was varnished which is rarely done !!

So a fine arts gallery has confirmed it is an original Thieme.  They gave me an estimate of $8,000 and up at auction. This was $ 8 well spent.  Super excited to have found such a treasure. Now people wont think I am a full on crazy nut. Just a partial nut. Lol

And how did they do that ??  From pics ??  Don`t tell me you paid one of these online sites to authenticate a painting ??  If you think it is an original,, take it to a gallery !!  Post a pic of the back of the canvas !!

Mart there is not always a need to be pessimistic.

Considering all the rip offs online,,everyone should be pessimistic !!   I look at everything as a fake until I prove that it isn`t !!
What do you think would happen if you sold something as an original and the buyer found out that it wasn`t ??  That comes back to bite you in the butt and its your reputation that is at stake !!
I hope she is right but for her own benefit she needs to be sure !!  Whatever amount she sells it for may not be so easy to give back !!

Btw it's on board,  backed by the framer. Bigelow was a major art dealer back then in Boston.

Great,, I was worried about the online sites that some people use when you said that was the best $8.00 you ever spent  !!  Glad you took it to a gallery !!  Hope it sells as well as they think it will !!
