https://www.kovels.com/discussions/need-help-identifying-origin-of-unusual-vase-with-a-hole-in-the-front.html
Everyone here knows more about this stuff than I do !! Any ideas ?? I thought the center section of table center piece or Epergne but other than that,, have no idea !!
-
What is the flower? Daffodil? Iris?
The hole appears to be decorative and not functional. A gorgeous footed vase!
-
Maybe a piece of ………… "Vintage 1950s Holley Ross China 22 Kt Gold Finish"
-
Looks like a daffodil to me !! Why would a hole like that be decorative ?? I mean I have never seen an older style vase with something like that !!
Have to look that one up Cogar !!
-
If you look at the design there is a "swirl" or "flourish" around the hole. It is an elevated vase (footed). At one time they felt that raised vases were better to prolong the life of flowers. Possibly to help in airflow!?
Not likely for a epergne.
-
But the holes do not reach the flower !! Just a cavity in the base where the bottom is indented !!
I am confused about this one !!
-
The holes would allow for airflow to the bottom side of the vase - under the water holding cavity of the vase.
Also, prevent buildup of condensation thus not ruining furniture/countertop!

Oh !! Good that pottery is not my area !! Do you know which company made something like this ?? I do not even know where to begin looking and now I am curious !!

Wish I could help out with the pottery company but have no idea on this one.
