Title: Wood bench with 1in grid on top

I have an old wood bench that has iron legs.  On top it has a 1 inch grid scored in it.  What is this thing? What was it used for.  It was made by a leading Game manufacturer.  Is it a game, a tool, or simply a bench?  ???

Photos...........du nno, perhaps just a bench that was used to play checkers/chess.
