Title: Need help identifying please
Post by: museumgirl on October 21, 2008, 07:45:51 PM
Could someone please offer any information regarding 19th century and early 20th century statuary?  I have searched through books and all over the internet and have not found any statues remotely like this one.  Art history is obviously not my forte. There is no maker's mark on the statue.  The family it belonged to was close with Theodore Roosevelt and could have had ties to Gutzon Borglum.

What is the statue made of?  Is it bronze, spelter, plaster?  If bronze, is the base removable?  Spelter is a zinc alloy that will appear silver under the bronze paint.  If it's bronze and the base is removable, check underneath for markings.  Usually, important bronzes of the age yours appears are signed.
