Title: old timber box

Hi all i am new to the forum,does anyone know what type of timber this is and what the box was used for ,and lastly what it might be worth.thanks terry ;D ;D(http://)

It looks to be made of Black Walnut.

It’s a guess but I’d bet it was used for stationary and envelopes.  The drawer could have been used for different writing pens.  Possibly calligraphy or some such fancy script.  It appears to be some kind of paper holding device.  The only caveat regarding my theory is most paper holders are designed to let the paper lay flat.
