Title: I need help with the identification of a silver box
Post by: misha on December 01, 2008, 02:41:49 PM
Can anyone tell me what type of case this is? I know that the silversmith is Sampson Mordan, circa 1880. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Misha

What 'it's not likely to be is a match safe ( vesta) match's were much shorter then they are now. it's not a vinaigrette. is has the style of a man's pocket watch.

From what I can see it's air tight. so it's a '' snuff '' Holder.

The first thing that came to my mind was a pocket watch case. now my question is,   is there a small hole in the stem ? If so, then I feel like it is a pocket watch. But if  not, I agree its snuff box.

Hi,

Thank you both for taking your time to answer my question. There is no hole the container is sealed, I beleive it to be a snuff box too.

Thanks again,

Misha
