I believe it is some kind of small double boiler or somthing of that nature. Any ideas? Sits about four inches high.

I'm so glad your eyes can make that out....mine can't!

rayfan87 are there any markings and/or writing on the "items".  Does the inner part have any holes (intentional for use) in it and where if so.

D&b....I have never laughed so hard....scared my son who was walking in the room I laughed out so loud!  I thought you literally saw the words! Ha!

I do agree that the design/style looks like that but was ready to go get my trifocals readjusted!  (Grin!)

here is a closeup of th lid, not sure if you can see it, but around the little stud in the center there are letters GLF. no holes or anything like that. If there were any marks inside, they have rusted away.

Its the only piece like it we have. It was found in my grandfathers house after he passed back in Jan 2001. It got put in a cabnet and forgotten about untill the other day when I decided to do some investigation.

I also believe that it is for having water (cool) in the outer container.  I have seen butter/yogurt holders that resemble this shape...but never in metal...so I nixed that idea.  Still thinking....

the inside isn't much bigger than a shot glass, so I'm not sure how much it could hold.

Im leaning with keeping the inside container cool.  completely inneficient if it was.

how about for holding melted chocolate? now I'm getting out there.

The picture doesn't show how deep the middle or inside cup is but I'm guessing the outter chamber held cool water and the inner held hot parafin for a candle.  Again, I have no idea how tall the object in question is.  If I'm right, which I doubt, it would have been a fat candle and I've seen regular candle molds.  Along the same vain, it could have been the same type of thing for cooling maybe newly made soap?
