Title: Could this old Chest of Drawers be worth anything? (Pic included)
Post by: skeletonkey on April 04, 2009, 07:40:11 PM
I asked this question before and people said it's most likely a reproduction...but I took the drawers out, and looked on the inside of the chest, and there are old newspapers attached inside. Couldn't find a date, but the newspaper mentioned the governor of Montana, Robert B. Smith, and then I looked him up and he served from 1897-1901. So if this table is the real thing, how old do you think it is, and could it be worth anything?

Could you please post a pic of a drawer pulled out (side view) and any other pics that might help.

Does the back appear that it had something mounted to it at one time (like a mirror attached)?

That is a typical bow-front dresser with a missing mirror that someone has painted pink. My guess is that it was originally golden oak …. but it might be what is called “fruit wood”. The bow-fronts of the drawers are typically veneered but now n’ then one finds them made from solid wood. Check the edges/ends of a drawer front to see if it has veneer on it and to determine if it is oak or not.

If it is oak then it is in need of a good “striping n’ re-finishing”. Check the following two Google Images out to see what I mean.
