Title: Manual drill type tool

Any help would be great...  There is no place to put a drill bit and when you crank the handle on the side in one continuous direction the shaft at the bottom turns about a half turn then backs up a quarter turn then goes forward again half turn and then back quarter, and so on.  It looks like the top handle used to have a stamp on it but I can't read it at all.

Could you post another picture of the shaft end but on a white background so we can see the shaft and what that bulge on the end of the shaft looks like. The way you describe how it works makes me think it is a "hole reamer". The 'forth & back' motion you describe would permit the "cutter" to self-clean.

I've seen something like this that was used in the 1920's-40's for manually seating automotive engine valves in engine heads .
Pics are pretty hard to see , though .
I'd like to see the 'business end' of the tool .
