Title: Genuine Morimura Bros. / Noritake tea cup and saucer makers mark?
Post by: smilesmadly on May 27, 2009, 09:38:10 PM
I picked up this tea cup and saucer at a yard sale. I did some research trying to find what it is and it's time period. Because it says Made in Japan instead of Nippon or Occupied Japan it leads me to believe it is 1921 - 1940, but the Wreath in the maker's mark is not similar to anything I can find in that time period, and the "M" is inside a circle which I haven't seen either.

Is it a fake?     Has anyone seen this before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome , smiles ....

There's around 400+ marks for Noritake stuff , so it's not too unusual to come up with one that can stump a person .
There is certainly a Noritake 'central mark' that matches yours , though.

It's just all the sifting through all the marks to find an exact one that makes a person's hair grow grey .

I've seen this mark many times , with variants on the precision/clairity and hand/machine 'printing' around it .

My best guess is that it's not a fake .
Wouldn't be the first time I could be wrong , however !

Thank you for the warm welcome Joe!

I've certainly picked up a grey hair or two on this one. Thank you for letting me know you've seen this one. When you say "central mark" does that mean the M in Wreath or are you refering to a particular type of Noritake Mark?

Yes , smilesmadly , I was speaking of the "M" & wreath as the 'central mark' .

I'm no longer a young lad , and will sometimes digress/regress into terminologies that spin around in my head , like magical pixies .

Sorry for any confusion I may have sponsored in this .
I am by no means an expert in Noritake items , I've just seen tons of it in my travels .

The Deco style of your cup was pretty popular in the U.S. for awhile , until it wasn't .

I think you may be right 'in the ballpark' about the era your little cup was made .

Others here may be able to educate us further , though .
