Pictured below is an old thingy that I have which I decided to post pictures of to see if anyone knows what it is and/or was specifically used for. I know what it is but will give everyone a day or so to make a few guesses or to post the answer if they know. I do not know how old it is so will just say pre-1940. It is 71” long and the handle is wood, the end projections are steel and the end caps of the handle are copper. There are no identifying marks on it.
I’ll give you a clue and that is it was used by someone in their quest of locating and catching something in the water

Something to hook a net, or drag something (like a net or trap) along the water? You should show these items on Collectors (collecting TV show in Australia), you could win prizes! They always have a guessing game for mystery items. ;)

Me too, suspense, thanks Cogar for the brain pain ;D. After the frog comment I was not going to even guess, Cause that would be my vote. It does look like the stick I made to pull my Bubble wrap of the shelf at work, but sure that's not what it was made for. :P

It was made in 1932 to sit around the shop and make people wonder what the #$% it is for.. and to annoy a dozen people 77 years later on this newfangled thing called the internet..
The end with the ball is what has me wondering.

LOL, Dontbe. If the item is hand made, then who knows what it was for, or even what it was actually used for. My Bubble wrap grabber just may baffle those still on this forum in a few generations from now.

My uncle had a great trick like that for getting worms out of the ground when he wanted to go fishing. (Don't try this at home kids!) He would take an extension cord with the female end cut off, wrap the bare wires around a screwdriver, put the screw driver in the ground and plug the male end into the outlet... instant worm panic with them pouring out of the ground for several feet around the screwdriver! Impressed the heck out of us kids too! BUT HIGHLY DANGEROUS!!!

Sorry won't need the worms with the Stinger ;D. No patent for you tales.

In the deep south , they do a thing called 'grunting' for worms .
They drive an Oak or Hickory stake (about 6' long) two feet into the ground , usually around lakeshores or riverbanks (kind damp soil) .
They then take an old leaf-spring (that they've ground a series of 'rachet-teeth' about 1-1/2" long) and push it across the end of the stake .
The vibrations it creates makes the night-crawlers come up to the surface , after which they become bait .
It's weird to see , but true .

WOW, didn't expect that many comments.
The old, old gentleman that I got it from said it was a "turtle hook".
One would use it to probe the "muddy" bottom of a creek or stream with the "knobbed" end to locate a "hardshell" or "snapping" turtle buried in the mud ...... and upon finding one would then use the "hook" end to get under the edge of its shell and with a quick jerk, snare the turtle and haul it out of the water.
One has to be careful around those big "snapping" turtles or they will lose a finger or two in a split second because their strike is quick n' their bite is powerful.
And the old story I was told as a kid was that if one bites hold of you that it won't let go "until it thunders".
