Title: This is the last few pieces (for now)
Post by: Keith on July 15, 2009, 07:49:11 PM
This first piece is a small monkey figurine. It has Japan on the end.It represents, speak no evil, see no evil, hear no evil. This may have went with something else,I'm not sure.
The next is a ceramic Japanese figurine,it is 8 1/2'' tall.I can't find any markings on it.
The last is,i believe to be crystal, however i am not sure. They are banana shaped, and are 9 1/2'' long and
4 1/2'' wide.There is a set of 4 and also have no markings,that i can find.

Hi Keith ...
From your images , I'd say that your glass items are not crystal .... but hey , you've got a set of 4 ....

Look at them close , and you'll probably find 'seams' from the mold that they were pressed in .
They look like Banana Split boats , to me .

yep agree regularjoe2, they sure look like the dishes for banana splits!  Bet they are pressed glass as well.  $l0 - 12

Unless there are some really rare markings on the monkeys....tops $4  The Hear No/See No/Speak No Monkeys have been around for a long time traced back to Japan in the 18th Century and even in scrolls from a Buddhist Monk from the 8th C in reference to an Indian God Vadrja!

As for the Japanese figurine...she sure looks to be made since the 50's to me.

However, the rest of the Antique_Shop crew can prove me wrong any day! :>)

My wife said,as a kid they did eat banana splits out of them,so that answers that. However,no matter how hard i look there is no seams to be found.

If they are crystal , you'd see sharp edges and perfectly flat surfaces where the details had been ground into the surface , and would typicaly have a perfectly flat-ground base (bottom) as well .

I don’t really think they were made for banana splits if they are 9 1/2'' long and 4 1/2'' wide. Unless it was a "banana split for two".  ;D

Me thinks they are just “pressed glass” like what I use to call “Kroger Glass” which customers could buy a piece or two when grocery shopping. Used as nappies, bon-bons or an auxiliary piece for a table setting for olives, mushrooms, etc., or whatever the cook wanted to use them for.

Cogar, FYI, even my pressed glass corn cob servers are over 3 1/4" wide and an average commercial scoop size is just over 2 1/2 " (just happen to have several of those and went and measured them).

That's not a bad idea Croger. But I think I'll have to cast my vote for banana split dishes.

a.) most importantly in my mind, didn't his wife as a child use to eat splits out of them?
b.) I think the length measurements are correct for a split boat, and maybe they're wide for condiments (can you use condiments as a word for ice cream and syrups? I suppose  ::) )

Okay... random little test here: kjfdshlksafdhakjdfhla  <--- Been wanting to try the "glow" feature out :D

...oh. That's not very "glowing" :| Just a highlight.

I remember that stuff going on , cogar .... even up to the 1980's .
Toasters , mixers & blenders in bank windows too !

Perhaps it's one of the many roots of the current obesity plague in the U.S. ....
Big dishes + buy more to put in them + come back for more dishes + etc. ....
(just kidding , mostly) .

I concede, ..... I concede, ...... (for now), ..... its a banana split dish.

But it sure looks similar to this.

FYI dimensions on split dishes which were also called "boats" way back when.

Cogar is right this glass was sold as a premium in grocery stores the pattern all way's reminded me of Hobstar. but it's not.

 ;D ;D ;D

Thanks D&B.

I decided it definitely wasn’t a “banana split” dish because of the pressed pattern and the serrated edge because it would have been a gawd awful thingy for the missus to wash after the goo n’ gom drippings of ice cream, syrups and flavorings had dried hard on said.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that! But since there is an identical set...

Hm, I'm still gonna go with banana split dishes! I know, I'm stubborn :)
