Post by: pineflat on August 04, 2009, 05:31:44 PM
Can anyone help me in figuring out this chair as far as is it just very decorative or does it represent something? Any help or ideas is appreciated. I have 4 side and 1 king. All have a different face in center. thanks

Can you get a closeup of the legs...looks like a face.  Figural chairs have been around for many, many, many years.

D&b or Tim would probably be good at this one once you get a close up  - and the back!  Many markings anywhere?

I love the way you don't see the faces right away, you have to take a second look! Very cool!

My quick drive-by guess is that these look alot like Victorian Gothic/Baroque revival furniture ; it was not so unusual to have a kinda hodgepodge of styles on things of this type .

As to them telling some 'hidden' story ... I'd guess not .

The man in the center of the chair looks to be a knight, judging by his helmet. I guess the next thing would be to try to determine if there is a story that incorporates the other elements of the chair with a knight. St. George slayed a dragon, so I don't think it's him. I don't think it is Don Quixote, or Sir Lancelot of Camelot either. Anyone know of another knight story?

Thanks D&b , for the tune-up on the Italian Gothic .

I have not paid attention to this type for 30+ years - nothing wrong with the style per se , just a personal choice .

Gave my kids nightmares , so I emptied the house of them (nightmares stopped , too) .

The ex-wife loved the stuff & is still p/o'ed that I got rid of it .

Gives my 'kids' the willies , even today .

That's too bad! I love Italian Gothic. In fact, I was looking for a Gothic chair a few weeks ago! Found the most ornate chair... for $5000 :P Needless to say I decided to pass on it :D
