Hi everybody - I'm new here! I was wondering if anyone knew any information about an old wooden bowl that I have. It's not a reproduction - that much I'm sure about. It says Parrish on the bottom, but it does not have this in a triangle which is what I have read that the Parrish mark is like. It also says Chicago on the bottom and in between those 2 words, I believe it says Second Quality. Here are a couple of pictures!

Any thoughts? I've tried to check into the Parrish mark, but can only find the ones with the triangle. :)
-
Does the center say "second quality"?
-
It is factory made, probably post 1960's.

I believe it does.
Does anyone have any information on the Parrish company out of Chicago? And why is this bowl missing the familiar triangle emblem of the Parrish company . . . unless there is another Parrish company? :)
I had read that someone thought the Parrish company was out of Indiana and went out of business during the depression. However, I can't find anything online to verify that or anything about the Parrish company. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Apparently there is a company, working out of Chicago selling '' treen'' a commonly used word for wooden bowl's spoon's etc. this bowl is worth a bout $10.00 Dollars. now if it had the been the depression era co. about $150.00 Dollars.
The difference is in the trademark being used.

Another bowl maker was Parrish. Years ago I purchased a large lot of these bowls with a note about the company's history. It said that the stock was discovered in storage, and that the plant had closed during the depression. Supposedly it was located in Indiana.

Here is my 2 cents....there were 2 renowned makers of wooden bowls (Munising and Parrish). However, there were many others who made wooden bowls as well....just not in such a large scale production.
This could be a Parrish bowl...made in a small town/village area known as a Parrish....(meaning of word is English and means lives near the church). Highly possible that this was one of those made in a small community and knew the value of the "Parrish" name.
The other is that this could be a "Parrish" bowl....but they wouldn't put their company logo on it because it is a second quality bowl. But, unlikely. No history indicates that they ever operated out of Chicago.
The logo is consistent when they do use it and this isn't one. (Maybe an employee took the rejects and sold them as second quality - has been known to happen.)
The last possiblity...is copycat....it happened in the early 1900's as well as these days. A great wooden bowl that was given the name Parrish for the "uninformed" and "unknowing" to buy.

Thank you all! I have cleaned it up and put mineral oil on it and it looks beautiful! :)

Hello, I also have a similar bowl with Finest Quality printed on it and then under that, Second Quality. Both with Parrish Chicago on it. Basically two imprints on it. The bowl is only about 7 inches wide and a slight crack on the side.....maybe what then made it "second quality". Just not sure. If anyone has any more information on it, that would be wonderful.
-
Second quality was put on items with cracks/flaws/unusual knots/etc. and most company's with high profile names would put that on items so that it would not tarnish their reputation for a top notch, seemingly flawless item.

My Mother-in-Law worked for the Parrish Bowl Company in the 1930's. The company was located in Hulbert Michigan, which is in the Upper Peninsula. If you Google Hulbert and Parrish Bowls you should get information on the Company. She had many wonderful and fun stories about working there. They even made an extra large bowl that they used to sled down the hills there! I have attached a pic of the bottom of one of our bowls. Hope this information was helpful! :)

:)Thank you. for the info. we are alway's eager for advanced info.
-
You're welcome! I love antiques & history. Today is actually my first day on here & I ended up with something I kinda knew about!! I do know she always called it Parrish's Butter Bowl's. It was family owned by the Parrish's. Some of them still live in Hulbert.

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION WENDAVES!
-
I know this is a really old thread but I have a Parrish bowl with the stamp on bottom, it also has a silver and blue triangular label on the inside that reads "Parrish" in the upper part of the triangle, and "Chicago" at the bottom. Does anyone have any information on something like this? Thanks so much for any replies.
-
Please include a photo or two.
-
The label really doesn't look very old, so I think this is probably a reproduction. Still, I'd like to know more.
-
Mmm,, I have not found any way to estimate date it was made !!
-
Early ones have a different font on the base. This looks more 60 / 70s
-
Agree with Ipcress about label and approximate date!
Nice bowl!

"The Parrish company made wooden bowls from the 1880s through the1920s."
This looks like a later, machine-made bowl. Supposedly, after the company went out of business, a large stash of these bowls was found in a warehouse in northern Indiana.
I'd estimate its worth at around $25 or so.

Not much on the company but found this !! The company was located in Hulbert, Ill. just outside Chicago !!
-
Thank you, to all of you who took time to comment. I love the bowl, it was a gift and it looks great on my 'possum belly cabinet.
-
I do not think they made reproductions of these bowls !! The larger ones are usually called dough bowls,,they made salad sets as well with a large bowl and smaller ones for individual servings !!
Please post a pic of the possum belly cabinet,, would love to see it !!

Hmmm
There's no such town named Hulbert, IL near Chicago.
or anywhere in IL
I've lived here in and around Chicago for dang near 60 yrs and I never heard of this place.
-
The sticker says "Chicago." It looks like Mart came up with information for a different company.
-
I don't know where the "Chicago" connection comes from, but I believe Hulbert, Michigan was the home to at least one Parrish company that manufactured wood bowls. (See page 1 of this subject.)
-
Mmm,, !! I just assumed there was only one and that Hulbert was near Chicago !! Odd that there were two companies with the
same name !! I think they were talking about the triangle mark !! Surely both did not use the same mark !! Didn`t see a different one !! Didn`t find any history on either one !!
