My Mum gave me this for my birthday and told me it's been in the family for years. No-one's sure where it came from or even what it actually is!
Has anyone got any ideas?

May we inquire as to what country you are in? It would make more sense if you are in that area? It does resemble one! Or....something to tie in with the region.

There are kilt pins that resemble the Scottish dagger or "dirk".

Hi there, I'm in Australia but I have quite a few Scottish ancestors from way back. The links that Saphire sent are great, one looks really similar. Thanks guys.

I've taken a photo of the stamps on the back, not great quality but the best I could do. I've tried researching the hallmarks but I havn't come up with anything.

I think you've got a Scottish silver hallmark for the town of Edinburgh in there, it is hard to tell from the photo, could that be a thistle hallmark, like the one shown on this page:

Also take in the W section- there is a WHL hallmark that might match yours:
