Title: Hercules statue
Post by: Dean Perdue on October 19, 2009, 10:06:05 PM
Any idea's on this this thing would be great. I really haven't found out nothing so far although I have tried.

The title plate says- Hercules and the Lion. It measures about 9" High x 6" Deep x 7" Wide.

I know for sure it's at least 35 years old, is hollow, and I'm pretty sure its bronze and multi piece construction, but other than that I'm pretty much clueless.

I think at one time it had a felt bottom but all that is remaining is a paper-like backing from it.

Thanks

Would love to see pics of the back as well.... This would be Hercules wrestling the Nemean Lion - his first of twelve tasks of super-human ability in pennance for slaying his children.

Here are links that might help you on your journey (By the way - love the statuette!  Real detail!  Reminds me of the shows I watched as a kid!)

Thank you for the info and your time KC & Sapphire.
Some nice examples to look at for sure and this Ed Smith is out there.

Here's a few more photo's.
They seem to turn out with the item being way lighter than it actually is.
The color is really dark when veiwed in person and it's quite a difference from the pictures.

Really like the details!  Will keep looking.  The most value lies in determining the creator of the piece.

I never knew that KC but thinking about it I guess it stands to reason. Thanks

Are you certain it's bronze and not spelter?  My first guess is it's spelter.

Thanks Railmann

Some small recent scratches or area's with wear such as Herc's tip of nose, his nuckles, there is bronze.

The tips of lion's claws, or sharp edges with handling wear are bonze in color and not a silver or greyish.

This bronze  can be seen quite a bit on his face or leg. This color is seen here and there in the tiny lines that simulate the lions fur too.

This is very nice. I like the base on it as well. What kind of stone is that?

Thanks Skinny.
I believe the stone is called Green Onyx.

I fell short of my explanation on the creator.....if it is a well known sculptor the value is more and if an unknown or a little known artist, the value stands totally on the merit of the piece and public demand.
