My grandmother has this piece that she bought second hand in 1944. She says that the cabinet portion is intended for the storage of medicine. There has never been any lacquer or stain put on the piece. She thinks it came from up north, maybe pittsburgh or somewhere of the like. There are pencil markings behind the drawers but it is in cursive and I am unable to make out what it says.

She's looking to sell it depending on what it's worth.

I would guess somewhere between $1000 to $2500 depending upon where she lives. If she lives within 150 miles from a metro area, the higher the price. Just my guess. It's a beautiful piece.

It really is a nice looking piece of furniture.. Hopefully someone else can chime in and give us some more info on it..

It's in the style of east lake. about 1890. the scribbling's are not uncommon to cabinet makers. $2,500 to $ 3,000.00 Dollars

Beautiful piece!!!!!
In my neck of the woods it would sell $3,000+

Are there cabinet makers to look for? I feel like if I knew what I was looking for, I would be able to read it. The first letter seems like a cursive G or F. Plus it's upside down and the glare on the unfinished wood makes it even harder to make out.
[edit] middle name definitely starts with an R

Try photographing the writing with a flash. sometimes it will bring out the writing and make it clearer. Beautiful cabinet, I love the color and the warm glow of the wood!

I'm jealous, ...... I wish I owned it. ;D ;D ;D ;D

It's got all the original glass in it.. I looked around for some cabinet makers from that time era with the middle name starting with R with no luck. Most cabinet maker lists I found didn't include the middle name at all..
-
If you could...please photograph the writing as talesof indicated in previous post.

I should have mentioned. It's Flame Mahogany. Gonna have too get some medicine for those senior moments ;D

This is the best picture I have.. I may be able to do better next time I get a chance to take pictures of it..

A little late for me to be playing with this, but looks to me like 'Carpentry' might me the middle/second name/word. First has the appearance of Zane ?? or _ ane ?
Then again my eyes are a wee bit tired.
Edited to add.......is that an 'M' at the beginning of the last word?

I have intentions of taking some more photos in the next couple weeks and maybe take them in RAW format. Editing should be a little simpler given the right software..

The size of the writeing. is and indicator he was likely to be and older man.
