Title: Antique Cheese Safe
Post by: honey1432 on February 28, 2010, 09:47:35 AM
In going through my mother's estate, we have found an antique cheese box that my grandparent's used in their store.  It is called the Knight Cheese Safe, pat. Feb 11, 1879, mfg. by A.T. Whitaker. It is made of wood and has glass on the sides.... Does anyone know anything about these or the value? we are cleaning out her house to get the estate closed out.  thank you.  I am a new member and hope that I did this right..

I don't see alot of information about your specific cheese safe but I did find this one for sale on eBay and if it's close to what yours looks like it will give you a good current idea of what they are fetching. Welcome to the forum!

Traditionally this type of cupboard had holes bored in the sides/back, so that air could circulate inside.  It was also used for bread, cheese and/or butter.

Sorry, I couldn't get to my mother's today to take pics, but will one day soon... this one would sit on a counter, it is probably about the length and width of a portable dishwasher, has a door that opens up on the front, windows in the sides and yes I am sure it has vents also..

thanx for all the comments, checking for me.. I wished I had of found this forum sooner....

Totally off subject but I see a phonograph in the background! By any chance are you going to be finding it a new home, too?

First I know very little about these kinds of things, but I see a lack of dovetails and kind of a bit modern looking to be from the late 1800's.  Would look nice with all the kitchen stuff that has been showing up  ;D

Hosman, with that handle on it ........ it looks more like a sewing machine case to me.

And Ironlord, it was most probably put together via "mortise n' tenon" joints or a remote chance it could be dowel pins.

I need to find something close to compare the two. I have not found anything so far . What does the front look like that has the advertising on it. Soemtimes this determines the value as in how ornate it is to a collector.

Thanks ironlord for the nice comment. I have been told my kitchen is like a small museum. I have been trying to de-clutter if that is a word. No more room for anything well maybe one,LOL.

Way nice churn!! That's kind of where I'm going with my kitchen too. A cheese safe would be great, but probably out of my current budget I'm afraid! But I'll watch and see too! :-)

I am no position right now to buy anything. I should be in the selling market right now. I just do not have the space. I have things  stuffed away in just about every drawer and corner right now. I am getting ready to sell a few items on that  big auction site. What do you need ? ;D Another coffee grinder ? Old blue striped butter crock ? LOL

Correct me if I am wrong but the name looks like Whittier.  I have searched the patent database by names of Whittier, Whitaker, Whittler and nothing has come up!  Also searched it by The Knight Cheese Safe and nothing came up either.

I have an Edison just like it so my husband may not go for it. :)
But that'd be great, maybe he will. You can email me at --.

Hero, the name is        A.T. Whitaker

I have looked and couldn't find anything either on it.

I'm not coming up with anything. I would be guessing at a value. It would be hard to display this one in a house so that would hurt the value a little. I still like it though  :D. This would be a great addition to an old style restraunt for conversation.

All I am finding are new ones, made in the UK selling for L29 to L50 for approximately the same size. I'm not seeing any antique ones. That doesn't give you much to go on for pricing it! I found these just by searching Google for cheese safe.

honey1432 see if you get any replies back.

I would be asking for at least $300 to $375 if it was mine....but feel it is worth more.  The problem here is the finding of the patent to provide the "umph" to the dating of the item.  Once I could establish that....would be asking much more!  Where was their store located?  City/State/Country.  How long ago did they have the store (years of operation).
