Hmm.... good question. I thought it might be a covered cheese plate, but the Mason Vista pattern covered cheese plate is wedge shaped. I'm not sure what this one is- Anyone else out there know?

The dairy used to deliver the milk and butter.  Actually used waxed cardboard!

The sound of the milk box on the front porch slamming shut would wake me up before sunrise!

The sound of the source of the original 'Pogs" !

We used to make flying saucers out of the caps from milk jugs .

I do remember milk delivery, but milk was all we ordered as I remember. I don't remember getting anything like butter or cheese when I was little. This would have been the early sixties, so it was on it's way out. I just remember the glass bottles and the wire carrier that they came in and leaving them out on the porch.

I did actually make my own butter once, you can actually do it in a glass jar with a whole lot of shaking, instead of using a butter churn. It comes out pretty darn good too! Sweeter than store-bought butter. Just put heavy whipping cream and a few shakes of salt into a jar and then shake the heck out of it. After a while, the liquid solidifies and wah-lah!! Butter!! I was actually thinking it would be fun to have a usable butter churn.

There are actually some rather nifty modern working reproductions of the old Dazey style hand cranked butter churns, but they run $83 - $150 from what I can see online. This is the cheapest I found at $83:

That seems like a lot to pay for the novelty of churning your own butter when it can be done in a empty jar! I would love to use an antique one, but the issues of lead solder, bacteria etc. seems like it would not be a good idea.

Tales you can buy them quite often at flea markets, garage sales and small mom/pop antique stores for $12 - $30 here in my neck of the woods.  (Butter churns that is.  Haven't seen the milk boxes.)

Hmmmmm, I'm old enough to remember milk delivered to your door and that went out in the early 60s.  I think it was 1964 or 1965 when door to door delivery stopped in my area.  I have about 7 or so of the milk boxes used to keep milk on the steps all from the local dairy here.  My wife uses a few for decorating around the house, proch, and garden. We collect items from the local creamery/dairy...bottles, advertising items, photos, milk boxes, etc.  Tales, if you really want a milk box, I have a small 'Dolly Madison Dairy' (stenciled) box that I was going to sell.  I can send pics if you want.

I also remember 'churning' butter in school (kindergarten or 1st) in a jar and then spreading the fresh butter on graham crackers and eating it.  I do not remember much else from those days but I do remember that.  It was the only time I churned butter.  I have an old Dazey churn but I do not think I would ever use it for more than a decoration.  My concerns would be the same as yours.
