Title: cast iron door stop

Hi all found this little guy and have no clue if it is a reproduction or the real deal, no markings, very heavy!!! any guess on value, date,maker? Approx. 8" high- base 5" wide.

This will be tough with no markings, but Santa's chubby, jolly look is post-1920's, so that does give us a starting point.

He is jolly Tales!!! What I have found is many did not have makers marks of any kind and can run from $200.00 and  way up but if original and not a repo. not sure what to price him for as  I do not want to put the screws to myself or a buyer!!!

I'm going to stick my neck out and say it's either a repo or a new one ...... for 2 reasons.

The casting looks "rough" ....... and the paint looks new. :-\ :-\ :-\

I am not an expert on cast iron by any means but this looks like it is new made to look old.  On an old piece I would expect to have smooth wear to the paint especially where it would hit against a door.  I would also expect some chipping and the roughness of the casting does not look good to me.  Does it feel old or does it feel newer?  The rust evident should be a dull old brown rust and not bright new orange rust.  It is very hard to tell from the pics if this is old or not but if you are having doubts, why not just use it for a doorstop?  I have an old green pirate cast iron door stop that I use all the time.  No markings but it has the appropriate wear and chipping.  Bought it at an auction years ago for $7 and still love it.  Aaaarrrrrrr!

I agree guys I found some info about sand sticking to the cast and showing through paint in repos just was not sure. Would love to keep it and have a door stop for spring & summer wayward if it was a basket of flowers or such but the thought of having Santa stop my door in 90 degree heat makes me crazzzzzzy!!!! ;D In my area to cold to have the doors propped open in December!! Thanks guys He will be heading to the flea for say $10.00

Yes, he looks new - but come on folks - he's still jolly old St. Nick and a darn nice one at that!!

Someone is sure to want him at $10. maybe even $15!

Yup, just wait until bout the 1st of December to put him on the market.
