The Badger, is right. some years back. texas badger tim my self were working a nother forum. prior to this one. the porno took it over. what was strange about it was the owner of the forum was very well known in the world of antiques.
And refused to clean it up.

I am disappointed by the spam that hits here. I would like to get rid of it once and for all. I appreciate all of you that hit the "report to moderator" button when you see "wrongly posted" material (I love that.. one poster that will remain anonymous is so polite with that note he leaves with his messages about spam each time).
D&B, what happened to the other board? Did it just "disappear" into the ether?

Whatever you do: don't try to start discussions with these posters as it's not worth it - they will not (or rather can not) reply as they are not humans but scripts that log in and post their muck over and over again. Posting follow-ups will only keep the original post 'in focus' as new and it's better to simply delete the crap.
Some boards/forums by now have 'spam traps': the first forum or area contains one post (merely an admin note with a warning to 'real' users) and every other poster there gets deleted automatically - as spam bots post 'blindly' they pretty much kill themselves that way, somewhat relieving admins and mods. Depending on daily traffic (and new users) one could also increase security by including *advanced* CAPTCHA methods during user registration - many people still do not know that the most first generation of graphic CAPTCHA codes can by now actually be 'read' by spam bot scripts.
I have seen more than one forum being overun by spam bots - it's not nice at all. Only chance to avoid a 'wave' (more than two new spam bots a day) is to block all new registrations for a while and hope that the forum address is removed from (or paused in) their database. During normal operations, moderators should all have the authority to not only delete posts but also delete users - fighting a script is useless so one has to kill a spam bot (a.k.a. fake user) instead of simply cleaning up after his posts. Some forum software allows blocking of complete IP branches or trunks but that option should only be available to admins as it can cause severe harm when used incorrectly - one could per accident not only block a certain IP stretch used by spammers but also *all* users from a certain provider (which is of course contra-productive).
