Title: Question Regarding Ivory Items
Post by: Marc-Barr on June 30, 2010, 04:45:38 PM
So, going through some stuff I discovered a couple pieces made of ivory. One is a panther or tiger carved from ivory on a tortoise shell base. The second is an Asian carved tool box. The lid popped off but can easily fixed so I'm not worried about that. The kits is incomplete but has a couple items. The box on the other hand is beautiful. My question is, since ebay does not allow items made of ivory to be sold where can I sell these? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thought I'd post a couple shots of them to give you an idea. I apologize for the poor quality. I need a new camera soon. Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions on where to sell would be appreciated. Thanks!

As I understand it, unless local law prohibits it, Craigslist has no restrictions so long as you can determine that your items are antique pre-ban ivory.

You can also contact local auction houses.

Could be abalone or celluloid on the tool kit.

Hey thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice! How can I tell if it is Ivory or not? Abalone or celluloid is something I never heard before (not sure what M.O'P is) I took it to one antique dealer in town who appeared to know what they were talking about (LOL) and they thought it was ivory. Of course, that is one person's opinion. I was considering taking them to a couple antique shops around town to ask but is that considered rude? Should I offer them something for looking? These 2 items I am not 100% on and want to know exactly what I have in order to research. Many thanks again for all the helpful advice I have received.

Marc -- M.O'P is "Mother of Pearl".  An opalescent surface with various colors is very often M.O'P.

You have some lovely items here!

I meant to mention that your 'box' item is known (in France , anyway) as an "Necessaire" .

Typically contained items for travel , such as : needle case , toothpick , 'salts' or scent bottle , tweezers , scissors , note pad & etc .

I don't know much about this, but aren't there some antique shops? You could try there. Or at least research there something about its value. Or you could keep it, because an antique item its always a value! ;)
