Title: Victorian? Vanity Set. Any ideas?
Post by: Solosammo on July 18, 2010, 11:08:45 AM
Hi.

My mum recently got a silver vanity set after my gran passed away. I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about it, there are no markings on any item.

All items are pretty heavy, believe silver but not sure.

I have attached pictures, any info would be greatly apreciated.

Thank You.

It appears sterling silver, Victorian, possibly Gorham Silver circa 1966 maybe earlier, a lot of these came in a 3 piece set... I'm going to say a guesstimate value of $250-$300 possibly more...

Without any silver marks, I would have to say Silverplate, Almost all sterling is marked.  As for age I would place that early 1900's based on the style of the handle.  If any thing like flatware, that would be made somewhere late 20's to prewar era.

This could also be true, I based the info off of what I've seen around and this information I found:

if you look at this 3 piece set it looks very close to the ones in questions:

I don't think it's silver, the tone is not quite right. Perhaps a pewter-type metal or silverplate. I definitely think it is from the early 1900s or perhaps late 19th century. Are the spines of the comb ivory (not the brush)?

Not sterling - they generally marked them.

Could be silverplated....how ever in the early to mid 1990's they were the rage...they have metal sets that look as if they are silver but aren't as well.

Recommend you go to a local jeweler to see if it is silver (can't tell from this pic).

Nice looking set.  They are popular today as well!!!!
