Title: makers marks

I have some difficulties with makers marks.  For example I just purchased a ginger jar, I believe it is Japanese, maybe Chinese.  It has a makers mark, of course written in one of the two languages.  What search vehicles or books are there that list and show these types of marks.  The Jar looks very old and is hand painted, one of the best paintings I've seen with Orioles and plants.  The stems of the trees are gold leaf.  I would really like to learn about this and figured that knowing about the Maker would be a good place to start.  Of course value is important to find out also.
