I need help identifying an item. I am usually pretty good but this item has me stumped.I can find no markings on it and it Looks Asian but not sure of it's age. Some sort of pouch or carrying box. Any advice, suggestions, or identification would be very helpful. Many thanks everyone!

I think this is some kind of bottle
it looks cool :)

Powder flask?

What does that little round doo-dad on the lid do? Does it come off with a compartment underneath it.
-
It looks to me like a japanese inro. Dimensions with the pics would have helped, but just looking at the pics, that would be my first thought.

Think mfrog definitely has a point there!
Haven't seen one of these in a long time!

The carving on the lid is just part of the piece. No compartments or anything. About 2 1/2 inches in length and about 1 3/4 across. My first guess was it held tobacco or some kind of spice. Does not smell though,so I am not sure. I found over the weekend I have one similar but slightly different the same size. They are kind of cool but not knowing what it is makes it difficult to research. Many thanks to everyone for the tips and suggestions!
